Actually, an aggravated assault (with a method or means likely to cause death or great bodily harm).

Though they have to prove specific intent.

I'd generally rather be shot than run over with a car (though you can run from a car). 

It's also reckless driving.

Is it wrong to say the police should place him in with the truly violent criminals awaiting arraignment so he can get what is due him asap??

In NYC they move people like that from precinct to precinct when the perp really did something as venal as that to cops so they cant get bailed out for 48 hrs
