GL1500 motor question...

Hi there, I have a question that I'm hoping someone can answer for me. On the Goldwing gl1500, just to the left and a little lower than the dipstick I see that there's what looks like a sensor.... what is its function?. I'm asking because the Valkyrie doesn't have one in the same spot... and I'm thinking that maybe it's an oil temp sensor, something I'd like to fit to the Valkyrie.

I don't have a clue, but the reverse gear, and mechanics are in that area, might be some thing for the reverse to work. Some one with a GW will chime in.

The reverse linkage is quite a few inches further back, and higher, so unless there is some sort of an internal connection to what I'm referring to then I would say it's not a reverse switch...but I'm not sure on that.

By your description, we need pictures.

I looked on ebay for a GW engine, looking from the right side of the bike at the dip stick, to the left is the revers linkage, which would include a switch somewhere in there, but I didn't see it.

I've looked at this in the past, to see about adding a GW revers gears to a Valkyrie, or a GW engine to replace a Valkyrie's.

I took the bolt out...there's nothing behind it inside the crankcase... It's a chrome headed bolt with a copper washer, right above the flat part on the engine casing where the engine number is stamped, ie, just below and to the left of the dipstick. On the gl1500 there is what looks like a sensor, in the exact same spot. So I'm thinking, it may be a good spot for an oil temp sensor...only problem is that the thread size is a 10mm x 1.0 thread pitch ...and that may be a hard to find sensor with that thread. Just been looking for a temp sensor with a 10mm x 1.0 pitch thread....they're readily available.

that is what the manual calls a reverse switch.  that hole goes into the gears not down into the oil.
