We've watched many of those. Netflix and Amazon carry some excellent series. Many of them are 'readers', made in Scandinavia. Even some of the series filmed in Scotland are really hard to understand, the accent is so thick. There's a network called Acorn TV (Amazon, I believe) that carries dozens of great series.

Yep, have watched most of the ones listed. If you're into The Knights of the Templar watch Knightfall. I thought it was a very good series.

I watched Hell on Wheels back when it came out and had to wait for each episode. I watched from start to finish and liked it. Found it similar to Deadwood without near as much swearing.

I was an extra in the pilot episode. Filmed SW of Calgary. Here I am in my sexy about-to-take-a-bath scene; I am surprised you didn't recognize me!

He was Norwegian. Watched every episode from start to finish. If you are a fan of the American West. One of the best series ever.

Graph on Rider-- ha ha. It was better than any western I ever seen. I wanted to see more. I went through (think) Havre Mt. About 18 yes ago and in this museum or store was a passage to the underground to see the places where they had opium , women, shops. But it was right at closing time. I love the west.

That was an extremely well done series. The corruption and politics that are recounted are pretty spot on. "Nothing like it in the world". Is a great book that will thicken the story out. I've studied the west and railroad all my life. Promontory point is in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

I have the series on a thumb drive and am watching it now. Really enjoying it - yep like Deadwood quality with little swearing. Not much T&A dang it. Really fond of steam railroads - have ridden all of the excursion railroads in Colorado several times. BTW if you have a source for downloading such videos, if you get them in the Matroska format they usually have subtitles in English. Very useful if it has thick accents making the dialog hard to understand. Like Outlander for example. Another great series IMHO.

Just finished up the entire series of "The Sopranos" now on to "Hell On Wheels". I had forgotten about this series until Oss posted this. I too love westerns and the west. I am 56 and was on the cusp of the change from Woody to Buzz. I'm a Woody guy all the way. Sitting in the theatre watching The Duke and the gorgeous western scenery in his movies. Been hooked ever since. Todays westerns are much more time period accurate.

I liked the Star Wars prequel - Solo.
They use a variation of the main theme right up to one point in the movie when it breaks into the full on theme.
Made me laugh and reminded me of watching the original when it was first released in England and no one knew what the heck the movie was supposed to be about. I saw it in an almost empty cinema.

Nope...he will be around for a while. Is the Swede the preacher dude in season 3 with the beard? It sounds and looks like him hanging around that little boy. Man, that Swede is a NUT job that is for sure, what a wacko!

Liked the first couple seasons. Then lost interest as show lost its history aspect, and became more soap opera.

I sort of agree with that after season 2 or 3, loosing historical and jumping around all over the place. I watched pretty much entire day season 3 and 4 and surprised the big Swede is still around going thru the Mormons as of now shaving his beard off guessing (not sure not watched yet) going back to the railroad to meet with Cullen one final time???????? Still hooked though, are there 5 or 6 seasons?

Just finished Hell on Wheels 5 full seasons like 13 episodes in each season was hooked on it. Man, that Swede (NORWEGIAN) lived until the VERY last (or was it 2nd to last) episode. He definitely got what was coming to him. Cullen Bohannan surely led an interesting life and pretty tragic one at that... If based upon a true story, when he went back to China to find his love, did he find her? I thought the last episode was good, but sort of felt that aspect of his life was left hanging showing him on that boat to China. I liked the last episode where the freed slaves jump ships and help Cullen Bohannan side lay the tracks to win the race. Laying 10 miles of rails vs. the other side 4 to 6 miles in one day is amazing could be done - LONG HARD work for sure. Now time to move onto the others mentioned. I watched the first few episodes of Godless and did not care for it, too boring for me. Will try the others...

It is a work of historical fiction, in real life there was no Cullen Bohannon and the person who the story is based on was a former Union soldier from Ohio
John Stephen "Jack" Casement is represented as Cullen Bohannon in Hell on Wheels. Although there are differences between the two (the character and the real person) there are a number of similarities that can be drawn between the two. John Casement was born in Geneva in 1829. At age 18, he took up a job at the Michigan Central Railroad, where he worked as a common laborer. By 1953, he was working as a contractor, building railroads with his brother (Daniel) in the northeast of the United States. He joined the Union Army in 1861 after the outbreak of the Civil War, serving as Major (7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry) and later as the Colonel and commander (103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry) In 1865, John was brevetted as Brigadier for his service during the war, and with brother, hired to by the Union Pacific to build the tracks in Nebraska. While his brother was in charge of payrolls, John would be in charge construction. The following are some facts about John S. Casement;
He married Frances Jennings in 1957 while working as a railroad contractor and a father of two boys He spent most of his life separated from his wife and two children because he was preoccupied with the construction of the rail line. He was efficient and tough during the Civil War, and as the commanding officer at the Battle of Franklin, Jacob D. Cox credited; "saving the day for the Union." He took up grading work and even opened several generals stored along the rail- line to make extra money He wrote his wife often, which offered her solace given that he was mostly away He was involved in the building of Boxcars, which served as office pantry, kitchen, dining room, and supply depot. His wife (Frances Jennings) went on to found the Painesville Equal Rights Association in 1883, and would be inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame of Ohio in 2001. Although he was elected as the first representative of Wyoming in 1867, the ruling would later be overturned because the election was regarded as illegal.
All that said, I thought the series was well done and the characters well developed and thought out. Gave it my highest rating.
