Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: January 13, 2019, 06:47:42 AM »

Yep... I suppose it could be the foul weather that keeps me thinking about fowl food, but who can know for sure...? Yes, I did have to cast aside any notions of making it to Lorman, MS, and the General Store this weekend, however... I just can't seem to shake the idea or loose the mental image of fried yard-bird piled up on a plate surrounded by delightful veggies with a glass of sweet tea sitting next to it... So... understandably, the thought of maybe working something out is still rattling around in my cranial cavity... sort of like a BB in a boxcar...

See, I was chatting with my land-lady a little while ago about my upcoming appointment in Nashville of the 23rd, as she was thinking of accompanying me. Well, out of the blue, she asked if I'd rather go on ALI... I couldn't lie, so I responded accordingly... She, predictably, suggested I just do that then, since my visit up there wouldn't be for anything major... Now I ask you, how can one logically argue with logic like that?

Yeah, it's going to turn downright cold during that week, not just up there, but all over the south... Still, thanks to my good hillbilly friends over in east Tennessee, I do own Gerbings... and, I've always had a rather low IQ, so... For yours truly anyway, yet another assault on some fried fowl is completely within the realm of possibilities! I was wondering if there might be any others similarly inclined (afflicted?)…

I'm talking about mid-day Saturday, January 26th, and staying in Vicksburg the evenings before and following that dining extravaganza... If there are any Eskimo-like kindred spirits , then I'll look into setting something up... If there aren't any stalwart souls willing or able to brave the elements, then I'll just stumble and fumble around and maybe make it there solo... or maybe not... It's jis 'corrdin', ya see... ona counta if I happen to be unaccompanied, then I'll be following my usual plan of no-plan... RSVP...

Jerry,

Yeah, I know how that can be... at least, I vaguely remember some of that... I'm just pleased you got out on the last adventure... another time perhaps...

Dan,

Yep, flexibility is absolutely required for peace of mind on any road trip. A common thread in military parlance is, "No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy..." It's no stretch at all to bend that saying ever so slightly and have it apply to trekking on a scooter! I happen to enjoy that aspect of my travels, however, so I view it as a bonus, not a liability! At any rate, your point is well made!

DDT

Robin,

Yeah... there is much variable weather between those two points! Hard to prepare for all of it, and much of it wouldn't be pleasant no matter how much preparation! I'll be looking for you and Judy later in the riding season, though... Thanks for the reply... good to know you're still kicking!

DDT

Just thinking...

Well, shucks... it looks like the cold is going to be more serious and longer lasting than I'd thought at first. Plus, rain and SNOW have crept into the forecast picture, as well! Dang, I've also been reading about the salt and slurry being applied to roads up yonder... some of which are where I'm planning/having to ride! The weather related news is starting to sound plumb depressing, and I'm on the brink... nah... Not this boy! Nope, no discouragement here... Heck, I'll just alter my 'plans' a bit!

There is no getting around the need to be in Nashville on the 23rd. I'm going to arrive on the 22nd and stay at the same motel I did the last time. I'll also stay the evening of the 23rd, because getting to and from the doctor's office, city driving, dealing with parking issues, yadda, yadda just make it much more sensible to use Uber and depart the following day.

However, rain and Snow are in the forecast for Nashville on the 24th!!! Dang, that will require me to stay yet another evening hunkered down in that motel... Maybe they'll serve bacon again...? I'll ask!

Yeah, I could always go in the car... However, salt/slurry would do a number on that vehicle, too! Plus, I'd have to give up the joy of a long-cut aboard ALI on the way home... Alas, I'm about three-quarters decided I'm going to just brave the elements anyway, knowing full-well I'm going to have to figure on a stop or two to wash our girl down really good, once I'm back far enough south to be clear of all the corrosive solutions along our path.

I'm also thinking I'm going to relieve myself of the obligation to be at the General Store on the 26th, since my quite cold ride from Nashville would have to be shortened by a full day, and any flexibility would have to be surrendered due to the limited time remaining. I reckon I'll just have to get me a chicken fix on some future outing... In the meantime, I'll manage by making-do with BBQ and bacon!!! Grits and pie, too, will go a long way towards sustaining me during that interim.

Ken,

Thanks for the reply and good thoughts! Man, winter group riding, especially north of I-20 is starting to get on my nevers big time! I'm trying to decide if I've picked up some sort of jinx, or if fate has simply determined I shouldn't be calling rides... Whatever, I think I'll just back away for a time and do what I do... stay in my own lane, so to speak...

I had harbored hopeful thoughts you and your crew might join us! The northern Mississippi contingency always adds a lot to any event y'all attend, and I was hoping to see your smiling faces amongst us. Alas, we may be able to pull something off down the road, but I'm confident others will call something that will work out. In the meantime, my ability to make any of these will be impacted by surgery, recovery, and/or possible complications... Oh well, life is what it is... and so is the aging process!!! Again, I appreciate y'all keeping an eye out for us, and thinking about stuff...

Paul,

Yeah, it ain't looking all that swell for Nashville either! Long range forecast even suggests it might get down into the single digits one night! Coldest I remember riding in was 8*F one time pulling out of Gallop, NM... Needless to say, I headed due south and didn't stop until the temp had moderated considerably!!! Moisture is the show-stopper for this rider! Long as the roads are dry, I'll probably have a go at 'em.

Man, this winter riding beats not riding at all... but sometimes it's a mighty close call, huh! Oh well, we'll see how this goes... Sure hope I don't have to hunker down 'till Spring!!! I will have to make my way back to Florida to swap ALI for the car, then return to Nashville later next month... In the meantime, I do plan to make my 'visit' up yonder as brief as I can, then to high-tail it back down where tire chains are never seen... Good luck with your weather dealings!

OK, I'm toying around with an experiment idea... I can't tell anybody what it is, though... at least not yet. I do figure I'll reveal this big idea later, after-the-fact so to speak, but for now and until I've found my answer for sure, I'm going to keep a tight lid on it. It's something I just have to resolve, and I can't come up with another way to know for sure... Curious? Yeah, I'd love to tell y'all about what's on my mind here... but that would completely destroy the whole experiment... as you will later see. Like I said, I do need to get to the bottom of this, and... well... more later... For now, just pretend I didn't say anything...

Ron,

Good point! Reckon I'll have to grant myself a 'waiver' for certain activities... That will mean extra caution, of course, when my mouth is open, but... Sure hope I'm up to the challenge! This question does need to be answered, however, so I'm going to give it my best effort to resolve... Wish me luck!

Ron,

Yeah, but those tests can be a two-edged sword! Especially if one has been 'exposed'! Moot point, though, as my conundrum lies in another area entirely... Patience, Grasshopper, all things will be revealed and made clear in time...

In the meantime, I'm studying the weather forecast and maps... Dicey, as usual! Oh well, ours is an avocation for the bold and daring only, so time for me to pull up my 'big-boy pants' and venture forth...

Heading out in the morning with the 'plan' being to get as far as we can before the heavenly moisture descends upon us... We'll then hunker-down for the night and hope it all crosses during our respite, so we can continue Sunday...

I have a nice long-cut envisioned, and I do hope we can explore those roads along the out-of-the-way route I have in mind... If the weather throws us another curveball, however, then I'll just have to shorten-up the route, straighten it out, so to speak, and do what I have to...

Next Wednesday is the 'inflexible' part in all of this, so everything else has to be worked out around that... Once that hurdle has been cleared, then we'll have a couple of weeks to 'mess around' and do what we truly were born to do... Well, maybe not...

My cousin/brother had surgery day before yesterday, and his colon has been removed. Doesn't sound good at all! Most likely I'll be returning to Morehead City again following my own doctor doings... Since his girl-friend and biological brother will be there looking after him for a while, I'd venture to say it is entirely within the realm of possibilities that a long-cut could rear its head on the ride over from Nashville to coastal North Carolina... Reckon?

Rob,

Good ol' Ethel... Know her well! Over fifty, so no reproductive risks or constraints, still has a decent figure, and she looks pretty doggone good... Most of all, however, she ain't 'trendy' or PC!!! Nope, no wierd body piercings in peculiar places or outlandish ink, and she told me she has no interest at all in 'Unicorn Armpit Hair', either. (How much KoolAid is needed for that?) Gotta love a gal like that...

Ron,

On behalf of my cousin and his cousin, thanks for the well-wishes! Yeppers, there are indeed some crazies out there, and you should know that better than most! I've gotten 'up close' to a few over the years, but fortunately never 'personal' with any... I have it high on my 'To-Do' list not to change that, either!!! I do hope your recovery is progressing smoothly, and that the days when you'll be back out here with the rest of us 'kids' are close at hand!!! See ya down the road...

Yeah, 'betting' is better than 'planning'! So, any thoughts on your return to trekking? InZane this time? If not, perhaps we can discuss the Yoopers Ride...? I'm not 'betting' on either one for myself, but I'm certainly not 'betting against' either, either!!! Ahhh, the life of the indecisive... are you jealous yet?

Bruce,
At this point, InZane is unlikely.  My bone doc is gonna carve on my shoulder February 7th.
Rehab is likely to take several months.   We'll have to see.

The UP ride is one I'm planning on making, already booked a room.   Planning on that run even if I have to trailer my (new to me) Valkyrie up there.   She's sitting in my shop and I've never ridden her.   But, I start her often and bring her up to operating temp.  She's providing me with the motivation to push through some of these Physical Therapy sessions.   The lady that I go to is cute as a bug in a rug but she's also the Queen of Pain.  Wink

So now, you know what I know.

Shoulder, rotator cuff repair/reattach and long head tendon something.  Will be using a scope and repair what he finds.   Can’t do an MRI due to pacemaker installment.

Aftermarket “Speed/High Performance Parts” are expensive ya know... Wink
