Newton's second law of thermodynamics (from Wikipedia):  The total entropy of an isolated system can never decrease over time.

Rather than allowing the first two laws to hold sway, we need to absorb the initial impact, taking that energy and turning it into something that fights the entropy, adding order rather than contributing to the disorder, adding something to the no-longer-isolated system.

I’m sad to say you are probably a better man than I. I’m afraid my natural reaction would have been less than stellar. Good on you  cooldude

Taking the high road when you can (especially when the low road is so much easier; and so much more appealing to our base nature), is it's own reward.

Good on you.   cooldude

I still hold doors for women and kids, and I rarely get called on it by women (as much as I did in the past), but I never slammed the door on them..... though I can't say I never thought about it.  Evil

Most of my encounters with the unwashed masses occurs at my local Walmart (which where I live, could be a decent substitute for the United Nations, diversity-wise).  I am friendly to all, and amazingly, most give it right back.

Being an older gentlemen probably helps me a bit with the toxic white male bad attitude routine.  And I'm always dressed a bit shabby (which is my style), though I haven't graduated to going to Walmart in my jammie pants yet (I only wear those to the mailbox).

Maybe it's a Texas thing, but I hold doors for everyone, and often have folks holding the door for me?

Pappy taught us to say please and thank you. yes or no ma'am or yes or no sir.
Do not ever say yeah. It is not an answer , it is a way of getting slapped.
I (was taught) hold doors , say yes ma'am or sir. I have been challenged for being courtesy.

SOME PEOPLE WILL COMPLAIN IF YOU HUNG THEM WITH A NEW ROPE.
I do not know if I would have been that calm or if I would just let the door shut.
I may say that I was not the one that crapped in the cheerios. Your response was  angel

Strange coincidence....I recently had a similar event coming out of a local Target. It usually has automatic doors but this day they weren't working. I was followed by a middleaged woman with her arms full and a couple kids in tow so I did as you....held the door. She lit into me with fairly foul language, letting me know that's what her kids are for....to help her carry stuff and open doors, which neither were doing. I kept holding the door and simply asked her if she kissed her children with that mouth. She stormed on through and headed for her car. A few minutes later as I was pulling out of the parking lot I saw a bunch of groceries strewn across the next lane. Her bag(s) had broken short of her destination and she had her kids scrambling to pick it all up while she sat in the car screaming at them. Felt kinda sorry for the kids....and the husband, assuming there was one in the picture.  crazy2

Good on ya.  My reaction might have been to release the door and walk away.  Hopefully the door would hit her. Or she would have to fend it off.  I don't encourage behavior like hers while I nearly always hold the door for others regardless of their gender or color.

You are a good man Daniel.  I am thankful such scenarios have been rare in my life.  Of the ones that have happened, I have a few times just let go of the door and walked on.  Once, I simply said sorry you feel that way.

Likewise, I don't think it is an exclusively Texas thing, I think it is a friendly, respectful person thing.  There just happens to be many of those in Texas (among other places).
