I'm just guessing here, but it can be difficult getting buried in Arlington.

With so little space left, the bar is quite high; it generally takes silver stars and purple hearts,  not achievement and commendation medals (a generalization).

The requirements are published, and your DD 214 pretty much shows you qualify or don't.  A review of his awards and dec's does not show the ordinary qualifications.

I could get cremated and stuffed in a wall (Columbarium) there, but I can't get buried there.  But I have no intention of trying to get my ashes in there, the toilet or some field will do.  The high dollar burial industry is on my sh!t list.

Not that I want to get buried at Arlington, even if I did qualify (which I’m sure I don’t) But I’m curious where on the DD214 it tells you if you can ?

Your awards and decorations. (medals and ribbons; but only medals count)

Nothing on your 214 says you get in, you have too look at the Arlington rules, then your 214.

It's really heroism and going in harms way, not outstanding performance of duty at a desk.

I believe if your DD214 is anything like mine, it doesn't say if you qualify it is what is entered on your DD214 that tells if you are qualified.  As Jess stated, you probably need silver or bronze star at a minimum, or I believe KIA qualifies you as well.  But them again, I'm no expert on the matter.

https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Funerals/Scheduling-a-Funeral/Establishing-Eligibility/Ground-Burial

I can't copy paste the PDFs.

Obviously an Honorable Discharge, and: Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Purple Heart.

Not the Bronze Star, even with V device (valor).

And any POW with honorable service during POW status, with an honorable discharge (after 11/93).

There are provisions for application for an exception to the ordinary rules for burial.  It better be good, and very few are granted.  And I suspect Gunny Ermey qualified this way, and thus the 9 months.

You may recall, Bill Clinton had a donor friend buried there, and he was later dug up and moved out.

I attended a couple official Arlington burials, run by the Army Old Guard with horse details, and it is very, very impressive.  Especially with F16s doing a low pass overhead.  They also man the Tomb of the Unknowns.

The sign says Silence and Respect, and he'll remind you if your forget.  (STFU)

Arlington's a big place, and you spend some time there in the old sections you will find men, wives and kids.  Of course the whole place was confiscated from RE Lee (Mary Custis, his wife's family owned it) as punishment for being such a good general.

She is buried next to him in the Lee family crypt at Lee Chapel on the campus of Washington and Lee University (where a group of us visited during the Roanoke Inzane).

Damn!  They poisened me with Agent Orange during the 'nam. Doesn't that make me a HERO?

That's funny about Slick Willy's donor buddy.  Just because you the POOBAH doesn't mean you have the pull to crap on REAL HERO'S honor!  And I'm thinkin anyone responsible for putting him in office deserves the opposite of honor!

Never been to Arlington.  Only visited D.C. once and my dance card was full.  Like to spend some time there now and pay my respects.

My brother-in-law is retired military with honorable discharge and receiving military retirement benefits.  I believe he is planning on being buried in Arlington.

I have been there several times on my trips to and through DC.  After our trip there in 2007 I made a video, primarily because one of my friends on the trip served in Viet Nam and he had never been to the Viet Nam Memorial.

I uploaded it to youtube.  If you would like to view it, this is the link.

Some of you met my buddy Big John at a FCR a few years ago.  His father was an Air Force Vietnam vet.  Binkie and I attended his internment at ANC.  A very moving experience.

I've been there a few times, it is always a humbling and moving experience.

My Mom’s headstone is in Ft. Logan Cemetery in Denver...not Arlington or Punch Bowl (visited a few times), but still impressive.  She was SSG in the WAAC during WWII and served in Rome, NY and at Kirtland AFB.

The military takes good care of their cemeteries.

My respect to your Mom. I've only met a couple WAC's that served in WWII. They had some great stories.
My Dad is buried at Elmendorf AFB. It is very nice.
