Motorcycle tanks used to be more of an art form. Today most are very similar. Here is a little stroll to the past.

These rubber tank inserts always made me chuckle.  I mean, if you are having to hold on with your knees, I think you are doing it wrong (though I have had a few short exciting episodes where I was trying to hang on with my bunghole).  That doesn't work of course, but the effort is totally involuntary.

That cream and black with gold pinstriping Husqvarna tank is amongst my favorites of the 60 presented. Now if you could find and post a similar number of full on custom tanks! Remember the coffin tanks of the 60s and 70s? RIDE SAFE.

I like the M1-A1 Smiley

Jess, the knee pads are for pushing the bike from side to side, as well as gripping.

Overkill? Maybe.  You don't see a lot on factory works road racers.

I think the padding is in the racing suits now.

I've always appreciated the geometry and craftsmanship of the 8.5 gallon supersized Boss Hoss fuel tank.

LONG time ago-I were still in my teens-a former friend did some Serious pin striping on my 59 Desoto-I SAID it were a long time ago-and on each front fender lower portion behind the front wheels Snuffy Smiff with a jug! Sad part is I believe I do NOT even have a picture of that work.  Lips Sealed Hand laying pin striping like that is an acquired skill-hard to teach-you either have "it" or ya don't. RIDE SAFE.
