a/k/a Stuffy. '99 I/S Valk Roadsmith Trike

De Pere, WI (Green Bay)

« on: February 04, 2019, 02:06:18 PM »

Jan. 9, I went in for gall bladder surgery. All went well with that except I caught a bug while in there....not fun. A week later the garage door opener went south so replaced that, only to find out the built-in remote in the car wouldn't work with it. The car is an '08, Toyota and others changed the system 3-4 yrs. later so I had to buy a doodad called a Compability Bridge(repeater) in order to get that system to work. Now for years on the Valk I've had an opener remote wired into a push button under the seat lock so all I had to do was press that when 1/2 block away and scoot right into the garage. Guess what....won't work with the new opener either. So I opened up one of the new remotes and after a little poking around was able to determine which soldered points on the reverse side of the printed board went to the small push button(4mm) that's actuated when you press the remote. I got out my solder sucker and small soldering iron, unseated that little push button and soldered in two new wires into the proper two holes, touched the wires together and the door worked. Cut the wires on the old remote, file 13 for it, soldered the new wires in place and covered with shrink tubing. While waiting for the thingy for the car remote to arrive a couple days ago, I decided to take a bike ride. Helmet on, gloves, light jacket, turn the key, hit the starter.....nothing. Put the charger on it until I got a green light, voltage check showed 13.7(digital meter), turned the key and it dropped to 11.3, hit the starter....nothing. Voltage dropped to under 9vdc. Aaaahhh *&#$@%&*^!!!!!!!!  Pulled the battery, up to Advance Auto Parts on the corner, load test.....zip!  So, $113 later I have the new battery on the Battery Tender for a while, and in the mean time the mail delivered the repeater for the car's remote to work and got that going at least.

So let's see....the past month was gall bladder surgery which I know will cost me some copay, new garage door opener plus an extra cost of the Bridge repeater for the car's remote, and a new battery for the bike. All one thing after another in succession, just to keep me on my toes....or depressed. Oh, did I mention the city is replacing underground water lines in the curb area between the sidewalk and the street. Guess where roughly 75' of my irrigation pipe is located along with a number of sprinkler heads. I've been watching them working their way down the street and they really tear things up so I'm guessing new sod will be in store as well. And if you think the city will replace and repair.....HA!

At least the sun is shining and will be for the next few days, temps projected to be in the low 80's most of the week. Can't wait to see what's going to happen next.  tickedoff

February starting that way for me. wife says you hear that noise? Nope. After 4 or 5 more inquiries I decide I’d better check the rear brakes. Sure enough pads down to the wear indicator “screecher” as I call it. Picked up some new pads and wouldn’t you know it, caliper on one side won’t retract all the way. So a pair of rebuilt calipers on the way. And so it goes.

At my busy corner/intersection of the subdivision, I have had the gas, electric, cable, sewer/water, and the DOT road crews tearing things up every few years.  When done, they shovel the dirt back onto the strip between the sidewalk and street, throw grass seed and a little straw (and maybe say short prayer).

That used to be as nice a grass strip as my whole yard.  Not anymore; it's a receptacle for mud, standing water, gravel and weeds.  And I'm done with it.

Their alleged easement might as well be fee-simple-absolute ownership.  Unless someone gets hurt out there and I get sued.

Sorry for your troubles John.  As far as I know, my Yuasa batteries from Amazon are still about $80.

John,

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to get out of bed, huh? Sorry for your woes... Looking on the bright side, however, at least you now have all that stuff behind you! Better days ahead, I'm sure, so I'm looking forward to some ride reports! I know you have yet another surgery upcoming, but hopefully you'll have a window where you can get some wind... I'm doing that now before my big deal and having a blast!

$450 for 2nd new alternator for Interstate
Few hundred in vet bills getting all 3 dogs and the cat caught up on all the things they needed caught up with.

You must have a huge fence. $700 just for the stain ? Do you live at the Ewings old ranch ?

300 feet of fence. We're on the corner of a cul-de-sac and have a nice 1/4 acre back yard for the kids and dogs to frolic in...

But as with all nice things, it comes with a price tag attached...

Whoever said a man's home was his castle was a liar.  It's his (lifetime) hassle.

BTW, if that is a pressure treat yellow pine fence (like mine), I think the common wisdom is to hold off staining for a period of (summer) months, to let it cure and dry out fresh lumber before trying to get stain to stick to it (even pressure treat is green and often wet when new).

And, a good four inch horsehair brush (and strong arms) does a much better, longer lasting job, than any kind of sprayer.  Though some guys will spray on stain, then back brush it a section at a time, and that can be a real time (and arm) saver.

I like semi-transparent stain (cedar) to show the beautiful grain, though I think solid lasts longer.

Tom Sawyer was a wonderful book, but that thing about enticing people to help you paint a fence is pure BS.  It doesn't work at all.   Grin

And when you finish the inside, then there's the outside.

I just redid mine (after pressure washing) a few years ago, and there is still a 6-70 foot run facing my next door neighbor I didn't finish.  He doesn't care, and I keep trying to forget about it.

Wink John, sure glad the surgery went well. I'm glad all you caught from the hospital was a cold. Infections are common, costly and bad news. Pushing up healthcare cost to all. Glad your out though and your health is improving.  Undecided Bummer you got home only to have some jobs needing done. I hope you can get out with the improving weather down your way. Take care,  coolsmiley
