I have been sprayed by a skunk, not hit though, but close, and either I did not get hit directly which I did not, but a few feet away, but the smell was not that bad.  I guess smells affect others differently?

Is it an ole wives tale about bathing in tomato juice gets rid of the smell? True or false? Just curious. Roll Eyes

Mythbusters tested it, tomato juice doesn't work.  Hydrogen peroxide, however, does work.

I am impervious to any smell, no matter how bad.  I was born without olfactory bulbs, therefore, I have no sense of smell.  I literally am incapable of smelling anything.

In a way I feel sorry for you, since the sense of smell is related to the sense of taste, and therefore your enjoyment of good food is diminished. OTOH, I'm envious you can't smell skunk Smiley .

I too actually quite like the smell of skunk, but I've only ever  experienced it incidentally, not been directly sprayed, that might change my opinion of the olfactory experience.

Also, for my frozen in friends:

A buddy of mine had a red setter that got sprayed. He read somewhere that bathing the dog in tomato juice would help with the stink.
He didn't count on the dog escaping the tub and shaking himself off in the living room.

I know what you mean:

A couple months after we moved into our new country home about 3:30 in the morning a horrendous, abusive smell crawled up my nose and awoken me!
All three of our dogs (a Lab and two Great Danes) tangled with a skunk that got in the back yard.
One of the Great Danes came in the house and was rubbing her nose/face all over trying to rid the smell! Which of course stunk up the house terribly!!!
Went outside and the other two dogs were desperately rubbing their noses in the grass in the back yard!!

And there was the almost dead skunk! I wasn’t sure if it was dead or not so I poked it with a stick, it raised it’s tail a bit!!  OH SH!T!!!
Finished it off with a shotgun and took it to the back lot and buried it.

I’m not sure who won that battle, the skunk died, but we had to fight with the smell!! Which included bathing the dogs repeatedly and pretty much washing the complete interior of the house!!
The washing machine got well used that day!

I did use the tomato juice mixture (and some other ingredients that I can’t recall) and it did help a lot and made it bearable. All the dogs got three baths that day!! But that stinkin’ smell lasts about 2 weeks. Faint, but definitely still there!

It’s been a couple of years since that night and so far, knock on wood, that was the last time, so hopefully they learned to stay away from the little black and white friends!

Dog has been bathed a few times but her face still smells not horrible but it does stick!
The house still smells but it is fading.  The garage reeks!  I'm guessing they were near the garage at the time I really hope my Corvette isn't going to stick for months to come.  My motorcycle is at the in laws.
As for tomato juice I was told it's an old wives tale but peroxide and baking soda does work!

I once ran over a spotted kitty and while it missed me with the spray,  it managed to douse the fellow behind me very well.  I helped him clean his bike but to this day he will not ride directly behind me. I think that was the cleanest I ever saw his road glide.
