They've been bugging me to allow it and I have kept putting them off. Finally this morning when I got to the computer, I found it had all been more or less "force fed" which caused problems for me later. I went to print something late this evening and it wouldn't print for me. I tried printing a couple different things merely as a test with no luck. Finally went into "devices" and found an extra four items listed I've never installed or intend to, and my designated printer wasn't on there but some other variation of the same model was. I removed the extra devices included the extra printer they somehow included. Then went and added back in my actual printer and designated it as primary. Still no printing but every time I tried to print a fax form popped up for me to complete prior to faxing....something I've never used. Finally got fed up with it, went to "updates" and searched the list, found everything dated today and got rid of it all. Went back to devices, was now able to designate my printer and a few tests showed it all works now. I need to find where to go to stop the automatic insertion of unwanted updates. Nearly every time they do it, something screws up. I want the ability to deny downloading any updates I don't feel comfortable with.

OK, done venting.  Angry

Dont know what version of Windows you have but if you go into control panel, usually at the bottom there is updates listed. If you open that it says settings and in that it gives you options on updates. I do not recommend that you shut updates off since for safety and security you need them. Make sure you have a virus program also.

Before you install them you can click on the number of the update and see what its all about. Copy and paste the update to search also to see if anyone has had problems with them. Not fool proof but it lets you make the choice of what to install and what not to install.

I do understand your frustration with MS and the updates. And I remember the update that set the printer default to PDF or Fax. I did not encounter the additional printers as you did.

I simply removed and reinstalled my real printer and changed the default from PDF to my printer.

Yes some updates reset defaults/settings and some make changes you do not want and it is a pain in the a$$ sometime.  But the updates also fix some issues so it is a mixed bag. And some updates fix issues introduced by prior updates.

So, bottom line either allow them and fix the issues or stop them when you get stable system and realize that future security fixes will not get done.

I am dumber than dirt on this subject.

But isn't there a setting where updates can't automatically be installed, but each has to be presented to you and you decide/approve?

Not that I would be able to understand them or know if I should or not.

Where's my coin?

Six or seven years ago, I forget when, I got very tired of all the "updates" to my Microsoft based computers and shifted to Apple products.  My MacBook Air is about five years old and still works just like it did when I purchased it.

Updates are basically done quarterly and have yet to cause issues.  It interfaces seamlessly with my iPhone (I dumped my Samsung device when I inspected the large number of apps that were installed that could not be erased).

It comes with word processing and ever other single office product you need and no additional charge.

To do word processing, I use to use Microsoft Office then they changed, if I remember, to Office 360 which you sort of rented it seemed.

I can open any word document in "Pages" and save it in almost any format I want.  Same with "Numbers".  With Microsoft I had to get Adobe Acrobat to store PDF files.

I purchased a refurbished unit for 15% off with the same warranty as a new unit (2014).

Yes there is a small learning curve but well worth it.

I use fedora. Once or twice a week a little message comes up on the top
about there being updates. Almost every time, I drop down into a
terminal window and type "dnf update". If one of the updates has
to do with the OS, that one doesn't kick in until the next time I reboot. If
the update has something to do with Firefox, sometimes that restarts.
Never any trouble.

Updates on computers connected to the Internet are real important.
It doesn't pay to fight it.

Yes he did ask about updates and I offered an alternative that will fix that, albeit extreme, to ditch the kluge Microsoft operating system for a better one.

And yes, my office used Microsoft products as well but then I had an IT support staff to fix the issues.

As for running "Mixcraft" on a Mac that was not part of the original question but there is an answer to that as well.

I don't fully understand the way "quotes' work so I took the easy way out and just quoted the whole thing again and thanks.  Words have a way of looking one way and being another.

Just for the record, I like a routing program called "Microsoft Streets and Trips".  To run that program I have to use a Microsoft based computer (it also turns out I have an old astronomy program that only runs under windows 98).  Since Trips and Streets only  runs under Microsoft software I use  program called VMWare Fusion.

And since I own all the older Microsoft operating systems, I just create a Windows Virtual Machine for the the operating system i want to use.  I stopped at Windows 7.

Using this arrangement I have the best of both worlds, for my purposes.  I get to run the Microsoft operating system for Streets and Trips under the security of the Mac OS.  Updates have never been an issue using the arrangement.  Cost for the Fusion software is minimal.  Windows 7 runs a little slower but then it never was that fast compared to the Mac OS.

I too use streets and trips, love it but there are no new updates anymore. i think mine is the 2001 version

One way to stop or delay the updates on Windows 10 is to set you network connection as a 'metered connection'.  Then it won't download updates without your permission.

This is an awesome tip. Windows is unusable at my house because of the slow Internet connection.

John, The f wits at Microsoft have locked me out of my email until I verify I am who I am.

To do this they want to send a code to an email address I no longer have access to or a phone number I no longer have access to.

Even though I updated my info over 2 years ago.

The alternative was to create a new email account which I did.

They claim to have sent a code to that email about 20 minutes ago.

Of course nothing arrived and now I can't get back in to my original email.

Yes it was  real contact from Microsoft and not someone phishing.

While Windows 10 has some nice features, I can't stand their new 'software as a service' (SAAS) model.  It's like Microsoft has become a big brother who knows what's best for their users, whether the users like it or not.

I have a Windows 10 PC, but I mainly use it for testing (I write software for a living).  I'll continue using Windows 7 on my main PC as long as I can.  I even prefer my old Dell tablet running Win 8.1 (which was a pretty good tablet OS) to Win 10.

Now here's a PC trivia question:  Why did Microsoft jump from Windows 8.1 to 10 and skip Windows 9?

Several theories, from legacy software mistaking Windows 9* for Windows 95 or 98, to distancing themselves from the retched Windows 8, to keeping up with OSX, to "Windows 7 8 9"...

I suspect marketing had more to do with it than the tech side, but as far as I remember Mickeysoft never officially said (Other than the "7 8 9" thing in binary)

And if that's a big jump, how about the version jump from 3.11 to 95? Or from 98 to 2000? Wink

Part of the process was to enter email address's and subject lines of recent emails.

How does one do that if you CAN'T access emails?

Delete sent and Deleted folders very frequently so how do I give them enough sent email address's and subject lines to satisfy their unrevealed need?

A modern Catch 22.

"You've reached the limit for account recovery requests
We've received too many requests to recover this account today. (We have a limit to help keep your account safe.) Please try again in 24 hours."

Their online "Chat Tech Help Desk" is as worthless as Dinosnakes opinion of most of us.

Completely hijacking John's thread.

Serk.

If I "restore" my PC to yesterday would my original email address reappear or is all lost because it's out there in Microsoft land?

I think I know the answer but hope springs eternal.

What I thought.

I got a friend to send me some old emails back and the sent email has been changed to the new one I was forced to create. Bastards. I hope they die of suppurating genitalia.

So I've lost all  my folders.

Emails from dead friends and family.

I'll never spend a dime on a Microsoft product again.

They text me a 4 digit code.

I enter it

THEY TELL ME THE F;IN CODE IS INCORRECT.

Then I can't get back to the ask for a code page.

I'm in Catch 22 the expletive, expletive, expletive.

If you use Cortana and want to clear info that she stores in the cloud, select Change what Microsoft Edge knows about me in the cloud, sign in with your Microsoft account and verify your account (if needed). On the Privacy dashboard, choose Activity history > Clear activity > Clear.

How do you do the above if YOU CAN'T sign in OR verify.

Dumb as rocks.

Right now I don't think I can even create a new email address in Outlook because my phone number is associated with the address THEY told me to create.

How F'ing stupid is that.
