I am seriously confused, and not making this post to stir anything. I fail to see why Amazon pulling out of making their 25,000 employee HQ in NYC is cause for celebration. If Fort Wayne were to score something like that, there would be dancing in the streets.
What are the thoughts of those New Yorkers on this board?

As I understand it, some politicians (and others) felt like they were giving up too much tax and other give aways that would deny the state and city revenue.
One would think that those 25,000 jobs would have eventually filled that void but, I'm no expert. What I do know is Kentucky offered huge incentives to get Toyota to build a plant in Georgetown, KY. That facility has paid back way more than was given to get it here.
Amazon also has a huge facility in Lexington, KY. Similar incentives were offered to get them there. That facility employs a lot of people with decent pay for this region. Yah, I'm confused to.

The majority of New Yorkers did want it, but a few outspoken local politicians were trying to make a name for themselves by opposing Amazon because Amazon isn't union friendly, might sell tech to ICE, would pay their people too much money and cause gentrification, etc... maybe amazon realized the sky high taxes in ny would translate to them having to pay higher wages just to have employees, which would destroy their business model.

Face it, virtually every left wing program ever proposed in the last 20 years was counter intuitive. And that's being nice about it.

OC said they could invest the 3 billion in schools and subways instead of giving it to the world's richest man...………..OH wait, they don't have the 3 billion in cash to invest, it was just the amount that they would forgo in payments in the short term to attract 20 to 30 billion payout over the next few years.

Roger. That woman reminds me of a old saying from grade school. 'If brains were dynamite, she wouldn't have enough to blow her nose." Schools are important to the left, they know the value of a good indoctrination, and would rather see K0-K4 instead of jobs. Losing good-paying jobs with health insurance from day-one isn't a big deal to the AOC's of the country. Under the left's dream for the future, who the snuggle needs a job? Better to stay on Uncle Sugar's plantation where the only work you have to do is make it to the polls once or twice a year.
Edit; Report: Widespread national food stamp fraud totals at least $1 billion, could be as high as $4.7 billion By Bethany Blankley | Watchdog.org
According to a new report produced by the Government and Accountability Office (GAO), at least $1 billion in food stamp benefits are “trafficked annually,” meaning they are fraudulently used. The extent of the fraud is uncertain, the GAO warns, estimating the abuse of the program could be as high as $4.7 billion.
About 20 million lower-income households receive benefits from the $64 billion Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, to buy food. But GAO found that instead of being used for food, many stores are defrauding the program by "selling" cash instead of food.
“For example, a store might give a person $50 in exchange for $100 in benefits – then pocket the difference,” GAO explains.
The Food Nutrition Service (FNS) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture oversees SNAP and is responsible for authorizing and overseeing retailers.
The fraud, known as "retailer trafficking," costs taxpayers at least $1 billion. However, the real cost could be “anywhere from $960 million to $4.7 billion,” the GAO adds.
The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA), a Washington, D.C.-based think tank advocating reform, launched a “Stop the Scam initiative” to raise awareness of the widespread problem.
“Welfare fraud is one of the biggest untold stories of the last decade, robbing resources from the truly needy and eroding public trust in the integrity of our welfare programs,” Sam Adolphsen, vice president of executive affairs at FGA, said in a statement. “While the bad-actor food stamp retailers exposed in this GAO report are in part to blame, we must not lose sight of the accountability that falls upon the food stamp recipient willing to commit fraud and abuse the system.”
The FGA hopes to reduce fraud and abuse at the state level by uncovering discrepancies in each state’s eligibility systems by regularly reviewing their processes.
“Too few states take these crimes seriously, and both states and the federal government can do more on this front,” FGA maintains.
The GAO published five recommendations for FNS to follow in order to crack down on SNAP fraud.
They include FNS adding retailer trafficking estimates in future reports, which it has not done.
Likewise, FNS should readdress the factors it uses to identify stores for possible investigation, and evaluate the “accuracy of its assumption of the percentage of SNAP benefits that are trafficked by different types of stores,” the GAO states.
Although FNS assigns a risk level to each store when it applies to participate in SNAP, it is not currently using this information to target its reauthorization activities to stores of greatest risk.
“FNS currently reauthorizes all stores on the same 5-year cycle, regardless of risk, although its policy states that it will reauthorize certain high-risk stores annually,” GAO states.

In a way - I can see the stupidity of offering big companies "incentives" like this - it's not like they can't be wrote off the federal return for the state/locals taxes paid.

LOL! Tax breaks to attract corporate business is stupidity? The real stupidity is demanding taxes of manufacturing and distribution corporations. Who do these geniuses think pay those taxes? The only income corporations have is from the sale of their products. Shareholders large or small do not pony up to pay the corporation's taxes. You and I, the little guys, who do business with those corporations pay those taxes.

You and I, the little guys, who do business with those corporations pay those taxes. Exactly. If anything, why not tax corporations only for what they take OUT of the business? i.e. dividends, salaries, etc. not what they "clear after expenses"? Look at the defective airbag situation, or some drug recalls. Those payouts will affect future taxes by going down as a loss, and the whole thing just goes back & forth like an accordion. Heck, if we stopped taxing companies we might be able to revisit Citizens United, since it takes taxes to have, "taxation without representation". I hate the way States are set against each other like some billion dollar Gong Show for new business, I'd be fine with making it illegal, since it's just bribes above the table, anyway.

Because anyone in NYC government or NYS for that matter are stupid douchebags who have no idea how to run any kind of business. They would rather float bonds than balance a budget or be honest with the voters.
My kid works for amazon for 5 yrs now, makes a good salary and gets stock options as well.
Don't know why a previous poster thinks they dont pay depending on the skill set of the employee. NYC and NYS have only themselves to blame
This reminds me of a quote by Abba Eban the former ambassador of Israel to the UN in describing Arafat and the leadership of the arabs
They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity

They can't see past the tip of their noses. $25,000 new jobs means thousands of apts/houses built, sold, rented. hundreds of businesses including supermarkets, bodegas, clothing stores, gas stations, movie theaters, pizza stores, dunkin donuts, starbucks, drug stores, transportation, etc, etc. All staffed with people making money and paying taxes. Goods and services moving and shaking..... all taxed. But giving Bezos a tax break just didn't sit right with them. Well, no Cortez et al got NOTHING. Cut off nose to spite face. Economic major MY A$$ !! !! !! !!
