Looks like since we're both well over age 65 it looks like the Std. Deduction will be higher than what I used when itemizing last year....which is fine with me. The income didn't go up that much so we should be safe. My problem is I carried over $350(took a partial cash refund) overpayment from last year and I don't see anywhere on the 1040 to list it. Any of you CPA types able to shed light on it for me? I want to get this out of the way so I can spend my time worrying about something else.

Same line you'd record payroll witholdings from a W-2 should be where you'd enter it, no?

Yes, but I'm assuming that applies to tax withheld in 2018. In the past there was a place to enter amounts carried f'wd.

I need to amend my Turbo Tax return and am waiting for them to forward the form once it's released by the IRS.

I already did it with Turbo, been with them for 6-7 yrs. now but this year it left me a bit confused so wanted to see the forms for myself. It's all seems fairly simple, the Std. deduction for us is $26,600 which is more than I can get by itemizing as in years past. I did the Social Security worksheet and came up with about $3800 taxable, but I'm still wondering about how to get credit for overypaid tax in 2017 that I carried forward.

I wonder how helpful the toll-free IRS help line would be? Worth a try.

Since you used Turbotax in 2017, it should automatically handle that when you do 2018 with Turbotax. Assuming that Turbotax is given access to your 2017 return when you start your 2018 taxes.

Agree. Call them I did my taxes couple week ago. Paid less in taxes and even got by about double the refund from last year. Not a lot, but it didn't have to pay. Even State taxes was less.

I filed the real short form. 1. How much did you make last year______________ 2. Send it in.

OK, looks like Line 66 on Sched. 5 is where I can enter last year's carry forward. Mistake on my part cuz I simply asked what the form was for and all I ever saw as a description was that it's for various drugs so I never went so far as to open the form. Thanks Bull. UPDATE: Since I wasn't able to see how Turbo Tax came up with their figure(s), I had decided to go through the paperwork/forms myself to see the results first hand. In the final analysis, last evening I came up with the exact refund figure shown by Turbo Tax so guess I'll go ahead and file through them as usual. I guess being an investigative auditor for nearly 30 yrs. has its drawbacks....I want to see how you got your figures at each stage, not just the end product. You get all that at the end, but I want to see it as I go along....step by step. My wife thinks I'm nuts to have done all this....she's seldom wrong!
