While waiting for my disability to go through I have been driving for Uber for a year now. I usually work Friday and Saturday nights. Week ago Saturday I had a pickup at one of the higher end hotels in Fort Wayne. Picked up a well dressed couple. I always talk to my riders. Mostly small talk like if i think they are from out of town I will ask where they are from. This couple was Troy MI. They wanted to go to a club in FW. The "Champagne Club' is a club on the sw side of town. Dropped them off and got another request from the same hotel. Picked up another well dressed couple from the same hotel.  Their destination? The same club. Talked to them and they told me they were from north on Indy. Dropped them off at the club. Hmmm. I'm think to myself why would couples want to drive to the Fort just to go to a club. Don't they have clubs in their own cities?

Not long after I dropped the couple off picked up three people going to a local bar. Struck up a conversation with the riders and I mentioned my last two rides. When I mentioned where I dropped them off the woman in the back seat chuckled. I'm thinking did I miss something? The guy in the front seat said "The Champagne Club" is the Midwest best known "Swingers club". Well that explains why so many out-of-towers come here. I had two more couples go there this last Saturday. It was hard to keep a straight face but I kept it professional.

Now curiosity got the best of me and I checked out their website. Their tag-line is "Where the sexy people go to have fun". Whatever floats your boat I guess. Just a funny Uber story I thought I would share.... Smiley

Not to derail this thread, but if you have been supporting yourself for the past year driving for Uber while waiting for your disability to kick in, why can't you just have a job as a driver instead of collecting disability??
Personally I don't know you, your situation, the nature of your disabilities whatever, just an honest question.
In my line of work I see all the people that are "disabled" and can't work because they are drug addicts, drunks, too fat, have back pain, are depressed, whatever. Nowadays you can be considered disabled for just about anything.

Do you really believe he is supporting himself as an uber driver on the weekends ? Sounds like hes making a little extra cash just to get by .... if you think uber is a good paying job you might be in the wrong line of work ...what is “your line of work” that you see all the “disabled” If you think he should be a full time driver , i challenge you to drive for uber or the likes During the week and see your income .

Thanks, Bill, for defending my brother so I didn't have to do it.  I tend to get really, uhm, expressive when defending my family.

Not that I have to explain but I will. I was a auto Tech for 33 years. That job took its toll on my body. Back, neck and knees, ect. During that time I took Aleve for the pain. After years of using it my kidneys were damaged beyond repair. I have stage 3 bergers disease. After that diagnosis I no longer could take Aleve so the pain returned. Sept of 2017 I had BOTH knees replaced. I quit my job as a tech prior to the knee surgery. As a result of the kidney disease I go to the doctors every 6 to 8 weeks for testing and treatment. One recent steroid treatment for low blood platelets made me so dizzy and tired I couldn't function for a week. Between that and the constant, blood, urine and other tests, tell me who is going to hire me for anything? I drive for Uber because I can pick when I want to work. If I'm sick I don't drive. No boss to deal with.

My wife and I talked and decided I should file for disability. Which I did Jan of 18.  Believe me I didn't take this lightly. I have heard of many people "jonesing" the system. I'm not one of them. You're right, you DON'T know me but now you know my situation.

Now back to your regular scheduled programming......

Before we get into a pissing match and getting bad feelings all around, I didn't mean any disrespect to anyone, especially the OP. As I said, I don't know him, his disabilities, or situations. I am one of the strongest advocates for helping people that need help and am glad programs like SSDI are there for the people that need it.
Mad Cow and Bill, you don't need to defend 6 Gun, I didn't mean any disrespect to him. I have absolutely no idea how much an Uber driver makes, how many hours or days he works, or if he is able to work more, or less. If folks took it that way, I do apologize.
As for me, I work in emergency medicine. During the past 10yrs or so there was an influx of folks jumping on the "no work, get paid" bandwagon. The disability rules have become so relaxed that it seems like everyone in the areas I work are disabled and taking advantage of the situation. You would not believe the number of able bodied folks of sound mind I have seen, and some of the natures of their disabilities, I could write a book.
To 6 Gun, if I stepped on your toes I apologize to you. I meant the question on a purely clinical type of standpoint, no an attack or affront to you.I am glad you are able to do something to help yourself in your support, something I don't see alot of.

No problem. Just don't make the assumption that everyone who is getting disability doesn't deserve it. I can only make up to $1,180 a month while waiting for disability. Ubering most weekends I can make $250. Depends on how busy and how many b other drivers are working.

This isn't an Uber story, but it has relevance.

Feb '18 I went on a road trip to PHL for an engine change. I was booked into a hotel close-by for a week. The first night after work when I entered the hotel, there was a woman at the front desk. She wasn't wearing too much, leaving not much to the imagination. All sounds good, right? No, not so much.

Anyway, as I got onto the elevator, the smell of the evil cannabis was VERY strong. I punched in my floor and began my journey. Well, it stopped 3 times on the way up. When the doors opened, imagine my surprise. Each floor's landing area was filled with VERY scantily clad folks, just walking round having a great old time. The last floor opened up to a guy sitting in one of the lobby chairs being serviced. He gave me a big smile and a wave as I took his pic...

This routine continued for 3 more days. The inevitable elevator talk revealed it was a yearly event, right around Valentine's Day... Grin Grin Grin

I was invited to join, but I declined..... Tongue Tongue

Just out of academic curiosity mind you, but which specific hotel, and what were the exact dates of this event?

I just want to make sure I never accidentally book myself there during that time, you understand, to protect my innocence and purity.

I'd hate to have a repeat of that one time Lancelot had to rescue me from temptation at the castle Anthrax, that was a close one!

I don’t know if it’s a yearly event here or not, but they rent a complete resort on the island for a week here. Seems kind of weird to me, but different strokes for different folks.  Smiley

I am more concerned with someone who works on aircraft mentioning he was around a lot of pot being smoked.  Even in my job in transportation (where I don't work on, or drive), I certainly would not ever mention something like that.
I have no issue with people who want to do pot, as long as they aren't my surgeon, a bus driver, anyone who works on vehicles, and anyone who drives/pilots said vehicles.
I don't get warm, fuzzy feelings thinking of the driver running 80,000 pounds of rig being behind my car in traffic.

LOLOL...rest easy Big Fella. An elevator a day does not a pothead make....

Sorry about my inference, I just was mentioning that I don't like to see people post on public forums things that an employer would find questionable.   It's just the world we live in, now.

I am more concerned with someone who works on aircraft mentioning he was around a lot of pot being smoked.  Even in my job in transportation (where I don't work on, or drive), I certainly would not ever mention something like that.

Baldo didn't mention it, but pretty much anyone who touches airplanes is subject to random drug testing.  I knew guys who wouldn't eat bagels with poppy seeds on them for fear of flunking the test.

That's true. Years ago that was a common concern, the dreaded poppy seed. It took quite a while for the testing agencies to convince everyone that there were tolerances in place for just such an occurrence. We all heard about 'that guy' that got popped for an illicit breakfast.

I haven't been tested in a couple of years, a coworker has had to go 3 times in the last year. Go figure.

It's funny how that goes....

Before I could bag your groceries at the grocery store (So long ago we still asked "Paper or plastic?" I had to pee in a cup.

Before I could sell you a Packard Bell 486 at Best Buy I had to pee in a cup.

Before I could work on the laptop computers of cubicle dwellers, I had to have a hair shaft drug test. (Ross Perot didn't mess around)

Now that I work on large federal government computers that do lots of big federal government stuff, no test required...
