I actually started taking helicopter flight lessons as a result of watching Airwolf.

Jan-Michael Vincent, best known for playing the lead role in the 1980s CBS series “Airwolf,” died on Feb. 10 after suffering cardiac arrest, according to a death certificate obtained by several outlets. His death, first reported by TMZ, has only now come to light. He was 73.

His image as a baby-faced blonde heartthrob was at odds with his history of violence and substance abuse. The troubled 1970s TV star had a long string of arrests and charges relating to domestic violence, drug possession, and alcohol abuse.
Vincent’s acting career began in 1967, when he was spotted by a talent scout just after finishing a stint in the California Army National Guard. His first film was the Robert Conrad movie “The Bandits.”
Born in Denver, he was signed to Universal Studios in the late ’60s by casting agent Dick Clayton, and in 1969, he appeared in the John Wayne and Rock Hudson Civil War pic “The Undefeated.”

Vincent’s film career took off in the 1970s, during which time he appeared opposite Robert Mitchum in “Going Home” (1971), played Charles Bronson’s hit-man protege in the iconic Michael Winner film “The Mechanic” (1972), and starred in the Gene Hackman Western “Bite the Bullet” (1975) about a marathon, 700-mile horse race.
His other movie roles included “Buster and Billie,” TV movie “The Tribe,” surf movie “Big Wednesday,” “Hooper,” and “Damnation Alley.”
In 1984, Vincent was cast as the daring pilot Stringfellow “String” Hawke, who flew the titular “Airwolf” helicopter and led its crew on daring espionage missions.
During his three-season stint on “Airwolf,” Vincent became one of the highest-paid actors in American television, earning a reported $200,000 per episode. Vincent started seeking help for drug and alcohol problems while he was still on the show.

Loved the show, too.  (not the final season with all new actors, though).

I do not remember Danger Island, never heard of it.  Was it on cable or regular TV since we only had 5 stations (locals) to watch until the early 1980s.

I would never have recognized him into his late 60s or early 70s, some people age better than others.  RIP.  Airwolf was a great show a must watch for me as well along with the 6 million dollar man.

little background on the helicopter in the show.  It eventually went to europe and served as an ambulance.  It crashed and burned years ago and is no more.

It's amazing how Jan-michael turned to drugs and alcohol, since he had a stable home life growing up. A good record in the Guard, etc.
After Airwolf, He was in a few bad car wrecks due to his usage, almost died one time, and due to procedure to keep him alive partially damaged his vocal cords and he had a very rapsy voice. then a few yrs ago he lost his one leg below the knee.  I always wondered what triggered him to go down that path he did.

He did such great movies. He was critically acclaimed for the TV movie  "Tribes"
buster and billie was the first R rated film I ever saw.

It was a show within a show, the Banana Splits.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Banana_Splits     It was regular TV for me back in the late 70s and 80s. In my little part of suburbia, we didn't get cable until the mid-late 80s. I didn't think it was regional, but I could be wrong.

did a little research and banana splits was original in 1970 and aired reruns until 1982 but still never heard of it and should since was on local stations.  I guess I lived a sheltered life back in late 70s, early 80''s.
