Monday. An ordinary day most of the time, but now and then it can turn out to be really special… like the other day for this not-currently-riding rider. Recently, I became a ‘Yank-ee’ on a Monday. Decades ago, I returned from Korea on a Monday. Most of the new jobs I began were on Mondays… But this most recent Monday…
I awoke last Monday to discover a text message from Lucky13, Gordon Brooks, awaited me. He is such a thoughtful guy, and a really good friend, too. He had just heard on the news that that day was ‘National Napping Day’… He just knew he had a friend who would appreciate knowing that, and he was most definitely correct!
I’d driven down to Montgomery, AL, the day before, because a crown had come off one of my teeth. I was still using my dentist there, so I’d swung through Monkey-town on my way back to Florida to see if they could work me in… They did.
After getting fitted with a new artificial tooth, I went to the motel for the evening, and… Yep! I took a well-deserved and long anticipated nap! It was my first of the day. I’m sure it helped with the quality of that snooze just knowing that it… and I… were being recognized on that special Monday…
Well, the surgery is behind me, and the catheter has been removed. I’m now seated at the desk I have at my land-lady’s house, and… slow, but steady progress is being made with recovery. I have no pain, only the inconvenience of having to wear, and the need to wear, a doggone diaper! I sure hope the day comes soon when that need will abate! Even if that day is not a Monday, I will still regard it as a very special day, indeed!!!

If the opportunity presents itself, please step outside and soak up some of that beautiful Florida sun for the rest of us, particularly me. I’ve had enough rain and cloudy days this winter to last me for years to come. Temps are up but more rain for the weekend!
Even with all the great care you have received it must be sweet to be back home for a while.

f6j, OK, I went outside to walk the dog... and to soak up some of that Florida sunshine and warmth just for you! Yeah, I enjoyed it myself, too, so I hope you don't think I'm being selfish here... It was nice! Hope you enjoyed it... I totally agree... Even for this wandering gypsy, it still feels good to return to familiar territory and comfortable friends now and then... especially when we are in a weakened, more vulnerable state. Be it ever so humble... and all that... Home sweet home, nothing else like it! +1 on the rain/ snow / cold scooper, OK, I just went back out and did it again! Was it good for you? I sure enjoyed it myself... I reckon I just can't get enough of that stuff... Mike, Very nice thing to say, my friend! Thanks... Hope it helps... Heck, if I can do it, anybody can! Truth betold, though, I didn't make it happen by myself. First, I had first-rate health care from the folks at Vandy! Jerry told me several times that he was jealous of the level of care, and the attention to detail, that I'd received... His experience a couple of years before at a different facility had been quite good but less impressive... And, speaking of Jerry, he turned out to be a first-class coach, host, and conversationalist for the nearly three weeks I spent at his place. WOW! It would have been a very different adventure for this blissfully ignorant 'patient' had it not been for all he did to ease my way to where I am today... What a guy!!! DDT

Evan, Thank you very much for your always supportive and kind words! I'm pretty happy with the way things are working out myself... I'm by no means out of the woods, though, and April 19th is a date looming large on my horizon! That's the day we do a surgery follow-up visit with my surgeon... I'll have a better fix on my condition and prospects after that, so my fingers are most certainly still crossed and my rabbit's foot is nearly bald due to so much stroking! I do have a calm, confident outlook, though, and I am resigned to accept whatever the verdict might be. If the prognosis is good and no-ongoing treatments locally are required, then Jerry and I are going to undertake an epic 'long-cut' ride to IZ and back that will likely include a swing through Canada on the return... That could easily turn into a two (or three?) month outing with many thousands of miles... If the outlook is dim or even grim, on the other hand, then I'll obviously have to weigh my options and make an appropriate call at that time... We'll see... DDT Henry, Thanks for the acknowledgement! And, safe winds to you, as well, my brother... See ya down the road someplace, sometime... someway, somehow! DDT Bruce, Here’s to good Monday’s, good naps, and good friends! Thank you for the very nice comments. Wow! I don’t know what to say, but thank you. +1. I could not say it any better than Oss already has. Bigwolf Jerry, Here, here! You are welcome, my friend, and every one of those words were deserved and for what they described much appreciated! Please keep your fingers crossed for me... we have a lot riding on the outcome of that April 19th visit! I described our non-plan plans to my land-lady yesterday and even she got excited! She instantly recognized the enormity and grandness of such a road trip, and she wished us well and gave her full endorsement!!! DDT

Dan, Surprisingly different considering major health issues when they refer to US and not to someone else! The stakes are obviously much higher, and the consequences resonate with much more clarity, certainty, and concern! When it comes to the 'Big C', my rule of thumb is... when in doubt, yank it out! No messing around here, just do it right the first time... thoroughly, comprehensively, completely. We're still in the dark about any possible spreading of cancer cells in my body, so the jury is still out. We'll have a better idea of where I stand and what might come next in another few weeks... Until then, I'm continuing to heal physically and to recover mentally, as well... If the weather works out to be cooperative, I'm figuring to make the Big Wolf Scout Ride the end of March, and hopefully the Red River Ride in Kentucky the first weekend in May... So much is 'riding' on that meeting on the 19th... Man, I'm a tad nervous, but... we'll just have to be patient... Yes, I am still planning on IZ in Taos... if all works out where I can... DDT

Yeah, we've all joked about that sort of thing before... but, when it truthfully applies to us, well... that's a whole nuther kettle of fish!!! I am becoming accustomed to the involuntary discharge, and my confidence in 'Depends' is growing... I still hate the process, though, as much as ever! Oh well, all part of the drill, I'm told, so this too shall pass... By comparison, the dental issue was a piece of cake!!! I hope to see you in Taos, as well... Like I said to someone else, I just want to be seen in Taos!!! I hope you have a safe and great ride out there, and if all works out for yours truly, I'll see ya there! So, this afternoon following my latest visit with the penis machinist, I was poking around on You Tube killing time(cheaper than poking around on Ebay). John, You are welcome, of course, but I really didn't have anything to do with that. Not that I didn't want that for you, it's just that... you know... I am glad to learn things have improved, though! Yep, I'm hoping to ride up that way to Webster Springs, WV, in a couple of weeks... unless the weather looks too dicey... Hopefully, this improvement you're seeing now is an indication of what is just around the corner!!! Are you planning to make that ride, too? DDT So, this afternoon following my latest visit with the penis machinist, I was poking around on You Tube killing time(cheaper than poking around on Ebay). My bowels are fine, but the cutting and stitching they have to do, plus the close to two weeks with a catheter in, really messes up the urinary tract and all bladder control is lost for a time. At some point, depending upon a couple of factors, control is regained in stages, and life returns to near normal... at least, so I'm told. So, no poopy issues, but lots of dam-busting and dike-rupturing to endure!!! If we meet, you might want to wear your rain-suit when we're close... DDT

Your post op and catheter removal seem to be top notch.
I know of some who felt the catheter removal was akin to having a large 3 prong hook being removed.
And some had to wear a pee bag for some time.

My plan last year was to catch bigBF when he came through Kentucky and give my girl a thorough checkup but that fell apart with his health problems. I haven’t been on a ride in over 3 years now and I’m still trying to get one house sold and another ready to move into. I keep myself content reading about your adventures in the meantime! Plus I daydream about an AtticRat reset too. But until the stars align, she waits patiently in her new resting spot.

Paul, Yeah, both of those first two things you mentioned seemed to have worked out quite well for this delicate, timid soul... and, for that I'm mighty thankful and happy!!! I was concerned, as one would expect, about both of those, but superior coaching and quality healthcare folks ensured both came off without a hitch... so far. Only time will tell if the problem is actually taken care of permanently. Now, as for wearing a pee bag for some time... that remains to be seen! I am convinced there have been modest encouraging signs of better days ahead... However, those times are most definitely not here yet!!! It is wearisome in the extreme to continually feel the 'release' and know there is nothing I can do to avert it... Changing a diaper several times a day has long since been getting old... Oh well, all part of the drill. I truly have no real complaints, all things considered... If one has the problem, then there is no alternative but to pay the price for a shot at full recovery and long-term continuation of life and normal activities... I'm in this thing for the long-haul, so I'm going to stick it out and let things run their course... I'm also going to do so cheerfully and hopeful I'll be back in the saddle soon... OK, and I'm also keeping my fingers tightly crossed! DDT John, No riding for three years! Geeeeez, I thought I had a serious condition, but... Man, I hate that for you!!! Surely the house issues will finally run their course, and you will in time find a way to restore your girl to her former glory... We miss you! The roads are limitless and time is short... Please don't dawdle too long, my friend, or... you know... DDT P.S. You could always come in that Vette in the pic next to your girl! Of course, you'd have to put-up with all the drooling by the rest of us...

Hope all is well with your penis adventures, and I especially hope your 'machinist' is gentle... Any idea how your drama might play out? I wish the best possible outcome for you, ol' buddy... DDT ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Had another meeting with the dr. Wednesday, the PSA is up another full point plus a bit. He definitely wants to do the biopsy now but knows my situation and will work around it. Emphasized it doesn't need to be done "yesterday" which is good....I guess. Also told me he'd do it early on a Tuesday afternoon but I'll need someone to help out at home the rest of the day and most likely the following day. Just wondering....was that something you found necessary as well. Hope to get it scheduled in the next 2-3 weeks so I can have an idea how my summer will go. As you can imagine, Rita is quite upset over it, can't say I'm all that excited either.

As you can imagine, Rita is quite upset over it, can't say I'm all that excited either. John, I was put to sleep for that, so... No driving afterward. All I recall was just the time involved and having to have someone drive me. I was able to eat normally and do pretty much anything else I wanted afterward. I did pass a tiny clot or two and had a hint of pink in my urine briefly afterward, but no real effects of any consequence. It was more of an inconvenience for me and not a major ordeal that disabled me for any length of time... especially the day after. We each have a different experience, and Jerry described his as being a bit more of a bother than mine had been, so... Hope it goes well for you, too! DDT P.S. With the steadily rising PSA, your condition appears to be very much like mine... I'd start preparing myself for the surgery, if I were in your shoes. My outcome would have been grim without that procedure... As it is, I still may be in trouble, but the odds definitely have tilted back more in my favor by staying the course. Best of luck to you, amigo!!! All I’m gonna say is, I anxiously await Bruce’s return to the wind.

Ron, So does Bruce!!! Hope to see you in a couple of weeks... I know you're not riding yet, but I think I will be, and I'm going to attempt the Big Wolf Ride to Webster Springs, WV... Perhaps we can share a meal together right before or just after... or even during? DDT

Bruce you must have left the back door open! The sun broke through and at one time this afternoon I saw the thermometer @ 77 degrees. I give you and the Lord all the credit due.
DDT Sadly, no riding for me in the near future. I should be in KY this summer

f6john,
Hey John, I can count on one hand the folks I'd trust completely and unequivocally to work on anything on ALI… BigBF is one of those folks! His reply says he's going to be in Kentucky this summer, so... I highly recommend you contact him, let him get your girl all spruced-up, then get yer fanny back out here with the rest of us Valkoholics!!! Time's-a-wasting, my friend!

We were planning on a group converging on Rams place for the central Ky folks. Hopefully that can still happen.

I am very happy to hear that your recovery is going well. I hope you get the news you desire April 19. Perhaps our paths will cross in May.
Stay in touch my friend.

I read on another thread started by you that you're still vigorously pursuing home improvements, etc. We all have our priorities, so that is to be expected... I know the group wrench party at Ron's place would be destined to be... special. Quite a cast of characters in that area, and some fine wrenches amongst them, as well... I'll be looking for you out on the road someplace in the not-too-distant future!!! Good luck... DDT I am very happy to hear that your recovery is going well. Janice, Things are going as well as can be expected, and in some ways much better than anticipated! On the other hand, my long-term outlook is shrouded in fog for now, and I don't know how things will unfold... or, what the implications of all of that might be... Could be no biggie, or it could be the beginning of the end... So, the only thing I know to do to cope is to take a road trip! On one now, and got a huge one planned for this summer... provided things don't get 'complicated' at next month's meeting with the doc. I do hope all is well with you, my good riding bud... And, I do hope to see ya sometime, someplace out and about this year! DDT

It's good to hear you and Ali are back at it Bruce. Kind of feels like "all is right in the world" knowing you are back wandering.
