Sometime last week, Dr. Patrick Moore became an 'unperson' on Google. For years when you searched for the 'founders of Greenpeace', Google showed photos and names that included Dr. Moore. But late last week, his name and photo disappeared. This is reminiscent of being 'unpersoned', part of the Newspeak in Orwell's 1984.
Patrick Moore was a founding member of Greenpeace in 1971, and later became president of Greenpeace Canada. But in the 1980s he became disillusioned as the organization became more political and less scientific. He left after Greenpeace campaigned to ban the worldwide use of chlorine, even in pharmaceuticals and to sanitize drinking water.
In recent years Moore has angered many on the left by challenging the climate change narrative. But the last straws for Google may have been when he called AOC a pompous little twit, and when Trump quoted him in a tweet. Here's some detail:
