Big Wolf Ramp Recon Ride…

I know what you’re thinking… The same thing most of us did when we first heard ‘Ramps’ brought up. Turns out they are a wild vegetable that somewhat resembles wild onions,  and they are members of the ‘Leeks’ family.

I’m genetically half ‘Hillbilly’ myself (I think I may be kin to the Beverly Hillbillies), and I have heard of Ramps… but I’d never actually seen one before. Well, they are said to pop-up with the last snow of the season here in Appalachia and be mostly gone by the end of May. The best ones, according to locals, are to be had earlier in the Ramp season… later they are much stronger and less desirable.

So, with something that novel for nearly all of us who had braved the weather this weekend, those unusual items just had to be tried… I managed to consume about half of one of them myself, but I didn’t stop because I didn’t like them. Nope, by the time I’d taken my second bite, I realized they could seriously light me up if I continued, so I allowed my better judgement to intervene… No regrets on that, either!

Family tree...

Ramps just cleaned, before cooking...

More Ramps...

Ramps fried in bacon grease...

The group began to form...

For the Saturday group ride we had eight bikes and nine folks (one couple). A really nice day weather-wise, and the scenery was great, even though we were ahead of the Spring foliage... Yep, bare trees and no flowers, but still a great ride and we all had a large time!

We made several stops along the way, this one at an overlook along HWY 150, a scenic by-way.

All of us had had reservations about the weather up here this time of year. A real 'roll of the dice', but all turned out well... for the most part. Saturday night it began to rain as a cold front worked its way through... The temps dropped and the drizzle continued into late morning Sunday, when that changed over to snow.

The 'real' temperature was not low enough for any snow to accumulate, but the 'feel' temp would definitely have done the trick! Big Wolf, MitchO, and this tenderfoot Floridian decided to stay over another night... Three of our group had departed Saturday afternoon for their homes, and our one couple plus one other left out early Sunday morning... Bless their hardy souls!!!

By early afternoon the rain/snow had passed, and the sun began peeking out through the clouds... The temp, however, continued to drop! We started to second-guess ourselves for hanging around until... the snow returned and any lingering doubts about our decision quickly faded... We have temps in the low 20s to look forward to in the morning, so... sometimes choosing the lesser of two evils is a very close call...

I like West Virginia! I've toured all over the state... during Spring, Summer, and Fall... The calendar may say Spring is here, but I assure you the weather says otherwise! Still, for this time of year, we truly lucked out and drew a good couple of days for the Ramp Recon Ride... Oh well... Those who ride a lot know that perfect weather is possible... but highly unlikely!

A word about Big Wolf and all of those who organize rides for us... Those fine folks feel some sort of strong desire to share a slice of their neighborhoods with the rest of us, and they enjoy providing a venue for us to congregate and bond as brothers and sisters. Our riding experience would be quite different if it weren't for the effort, heartburn, and sometimes heartache they endure to make all of this possible for us to enjoy. They truly are underappreciated for all they do!!!

Even the bad weather, though, unpleasant while it's being endured, is the stuff of great memories and guaranteed bragging rights later on, so those things, too, are part of the great experience. Jerry did an excellent job setting this ride up, and I know he is gratified others came to share the weekend with him and with each other... I know I'm mighty glad I came!!!

mmm...looks a mite cooler down there compared to our weekend up in BC. Good on you for braving the weather and hitting the road cooldude

Ramps...learn something new everyday. Never heard of 'em, but I do like leeks and green onions...they look kinda similar, do they taste similar? The Mrs just researched them after I asked her about them  (she knows just about everything ...except about ramps Wink).  Apparently a bit of a delicacy up here...run you about $20.00 a pound.

Those ramps look akin to leeks.  Are they leeky?

EDIT: Reread that second sentence, sounds like they are leeky.  And wise to not eat too many so you didn't get leaky!

God bless Appalachia.

Good seeing everyone and I agree Jerry’s ride was top notch. Hope to make it an annual event, God willing and the creek don’t rise.

I’m glad to have left Saturday evening; got home before 10 (259 miles). The winds were brutal on the open interstates but the night temp barely dropped below 60 by the time I arrived.

We made it back Sat night with the temps hanging in the low 60's.

Your "Weather Report" definitely tells me that we made the right choice.

You are also correct that it was a good day, a good ride and a good time.

A big thanks to Big Wolf for making the time and effort to organize it.

There truly is a great bunch of people in this little Valkyrie club and it's always nice to have an excuse to hang out with some of them for a little bit.

Mike,

Ah, yes! The vagaries of weather systems and patterns, and the impact of change - natural and man-made - all combine to produce some illogical contrasts! Still, we do what we do, brave the elements, then big-dog-it at gatherings when we exchange our experiences of daring-do... Part of the earning of bona-fides for trekkers, riders, and adventurers with their peers, it seems... Plus, recollections of all the difficulties faced and overcome add much satisfaction and enjoyment to our own memories, as we look back and savor those special times!

Apparently, Ramps are part of the way early settlers to that region learned to 'live off the land'. All newcomers must adapt and learn what they can eat... and not eat... in order to survive, perhaps flourish, in new environments. They seemed a tad 'strong' to me, but I didn't mind them at all. I like onions and the like, but they seem to not like me so much in recent years... They are not the only things I've had to give-up, but my heartburn and other symptoms have happily been reduced! If you tolerate green onions well, then by all means do give these a try! You'll probably like them...

Rob,

No self-respecting, serious adventurer can not experiment, sample, and try-out new stuff when opportunities present themselves! You being one of the more serious 'samplers of the full life' simply must try these! Not a big deal, really, and for those who like those types of food 'enhancements', they are actually rather good... I'd probably eat them, if my innards weren't so delicate...

Seth,

Ya know, I did hear some reference to a 'leaky' potential with those... I didn't eat enough myself (two bites) to suffer any of those effects, but I did have just enough to realize they probably held other possibilities very much in store for the unwary!

Earl,

Indeed! God bless Appalachia! I'm glad you decided to join us! It was good to jaw more with you and to get to know you a bit better... Looking forward to sharing more of that with you down the road! As for the weather-influenced departure choice you made... I can't argue with success! You definitely had a better ride Saturday afternoon than you would have had Sunday morning!!! Plus, you would have been in it all day, as the system moved in the same direction you'd have been traveling...

Bill,

We were relieved when we learned y'all had arrived safe & sound! The weather appeared rather ify, but we were hopeful you'd punch-thru the moisture and have a more pleasant ride home, as it appears you did. It's always good to have you & Trish join us! Y'all add a special 'flavor' to our mix of characters, and I do enjoy your company! See ya again!!!

Mark,

Always good to have you join us, and your pals, too, are always a welcomed addition! Only thing missing was 'Ginger'... Yeah, you chose wisely, Grasshopper, as your ride, even after a long group ride already that day, was still more pleasant than what you would have had the following day!!! See ya at the next one!

Dennis,

Yeah, I'm certain you'd like those, based upon your commentary in your reply! I'm impressed you still tolerate such things so well! Apparently your doc is too... BTW, glad you got a good report from him this last visit, and I'm looking forward to sharing some wind with you... one of these days... In the meantime, I'll just muddle along with my comparatively bland diet, and continue to compensate with lots of bacon, BBQ, and coconut pie!

DDT

I can't say enough good things about Jerry and his efforts in putting this ride together! Most don't know that he fretted & stewed a bunch, wanting this to turnout well. The weather was a gamble for sure, and this being his first ride put-on all had him concerned much more than he let on... He was quite happy to see those who did show-up, and I know he felt great relief by the time things concluded... happily and safely. Thanks, Jerry! You done good, my friend!!!

Thank's to Jerry, we all had a great weekend ride. Saturday was near perfect weather and although I had about 60 mile of snow Sunday (none on the road) it was still a good ride. Good seeing everyone and meeting Earl for the first time. This VRCC Family of ours is hard to beat.

The talk of wild ramps made me think back to my time stationed in Vallejo, California. I was going to school at Mare Island. In the spring wild asparagus would grow in the empty fields on base. We would feast on it for a week or so. I don’t know why but it was 10 times better than asparagus you get in the store.

Bruce,
I am so glad that you did not hurt yourself on ramps...........you might have noticed that I brought only one to you for you to see/taste.

Speaking of ramps, it was never my intention to make the Recon ride about ramps..........but I guess that does put an interesting uniqueness to the ride.  It certainly added to the experience and conversation.

A great post my friend!

Thank you for the very nice things and compliments you said.

Bigwolf

To everyone that showed up for this ride, thank you!  It was my pleasure to introduce you to part of my native state and to one of it’s culinary oddities.

To those who have sung my praises for this ride, thank you.  I too had a great time, but seeing you guys having a great time made it even better for me.

Paul,

Nope. None of 'those kinds of ramps'! Heck, nobody even did a wheelie that I saw. Pretty tame outing... until the weather turned! It got rather interesting then, however...

Charlie,

I know White Top Mountain! Camped up there once upon a time when I was a kid. I've also ridden by there a few times on HWY 58. Never been to the festival, though, and I probably won't... No pondering necessary! Ramps are a novelty and topic for conversation only, as far as this tenderfoot is concerned... Shoot, I roll the dice just eating a few bits of onion now and then on a sandwich or pizza!

Keith,

It was really good seeing you standing there when I pulled up Friday afternoon! Always a pleasure to pass some time with you... Things took an even more positive tack when my headlight went out and YOU happened to have a spare bulb! BTW, I was so overwhelmed at the time, I totally forgot to pay you for that... I'll catch up with ya next time, though, and definitely make things right! Glad you made it home OK... we were a bit worried, given that you were riding north, and the weather in Webster Springs was too nasty for all of us who would have been riding south. I appreciate ya, dude!

Rob,

I know what ya mean! Yep, the 'forbidden fruit' always tastes better than normally acquired stuff. I've had a mixed relationship with asparagus... I tolerate it well enough, but the color of... my solid waste discharge changes color to green! Other things can also have a similar effect, but... well, perhaps this a topic better left for another venue... Glad this triggered a pleasant memory for ya! Hope my comments haven't taken the edge off of that...

Jerry,

Yep, you do know me well! One measley Ramp turned out to be too much, but at least I did get to try them... Yeah, I know you never intended for this to be known as a 'Ramp' ride... I took a little liberty there, but I did want to work that into the narrative, as I thought it was all pretty cool.

You are welcome for the statements I made... You deserved all that and more! I'm proud of you for all you did, and I'm impressed with the calm, cool demeanor you maintained throughout... even when the weather stopped cooperating! Looking forward to our epic trek just down the road!!!

Bruce, Always good to see and you the rest of the family. Telling truth's, lies and just plain ole BS, it's not about the ride, it's the get together's and socializing  that make the VRCC what it is. That headlight bulb has been paid in full many times over. See you in Inzane.

Keith,

Yeah, kicking tires is always the highlight of those gatherings for me, too... and, who can spin better yarns that our bunch?! The entire experience was a non-stop series of unusual happenings, and I'm truly glad I didn't miss any of that adventure. It was worth all the sprinkles, even the ones in my drawers, to be there and to share a few moments with you and the gang! I do appreciate that headlight bulb! Perhaps Jane can give me a hint how I might repay you and your kindness! You betcha! I plan to be at IZ, so seeing you and your 'boss' there will certainly be a major bonus!!!

We have annual Ramp Festival here in Ballplay Tn. It’s held at one of the local churches and includes local bluegrass music and other festival type stuff. It’s a great time to meet your neighbors which are far and few apart.
