On Friday I made a last-minute decision to drive to Great Falls, MT for a church conference. There is a pastor who ministers in Jupiter, FL whose sermons I listen to regularly as I travel back and forth to work here in Calgary. For years I've wished that circumstances would bring me to Florida so I could pay a visit to him and let him know how much I appreciate his church making his messages available to download from the internet, as they have had a huge impact on my faith and theology. On Friday on the way to work I was listening to a message recorded on Tuesday, and at the end he mentioned that he would be speaking at a conference in Great Falls. As soon as I got to work I looked up the conference and saw that it started that afternoon. After some negotiation with my wife, I took the day off, packed, topped up my truck's tire pressures, and aimed for Montana.
I enjoyed the conference which ended Saturday afternoon, but had to head home right away as I was heavily involved in church Sunday morning.
I was driving after dark on a two-lane highway in southern Alberta, and noticed approaching headlights seemed to be in my lane. As we approached each other more closely, I could see that
the vehicle was definitely in my lane, and for no discernible reason. I took the right shoulder and was prepared to hit the ditch when he (she?) passed me fully in the lane I was travelling in moments before. It made me think of how we are never guaranteed another minute in this life.
