I read this story yesterday and am still awestruck about it. That must have been a terrible 3 days for those parents.

Not many stories like this end with a good outcome and this one did through pure chance, I suspect.
Given the close proximity to his home, I believe this little boy was so exhausted that he just happened to sit or lie down where he was found; any further wandering would have led him to his demise.
So, that's all the good from this story.

The responsibility lies with the parents for letting him wander off in the first place.  Yes, their anxiety would deserve empathy, but their negligence deserves that they apologize to all the people who had to put themselves out in the woods due to their stupidity and lack of attention to their son.
I'd test them for alcohol and drugs to determine if they warrant being charged.  If they are cleared, they need a stern warning that this never happen again.

I think your statements are pure bullshit. We all know how fast a child can wonder off. Both of mine have done it. Get busy working on something in the garage and next thing you know the kids are gone. Or in a store. You stop to look at something and boom, GONE. so for you to make such an outrageous claim about the parents is stupid. Maybe everytime you do something wrong we should load you up and check you for drugs and alcohol. Maybe you don't  have kids and don't understand how fast this could happen. What gets me is they used trailing dogs and he was only 1,755 feet from his home?  That is 585 yards, this should be easy for a trailing dog. Someone needs to hire new dogs and maybe he would have been found the first night.
