C8 Corvette

Stayed up late last night to watch the live introduction of the C8 Corvette held on the west coast. I was impressed to say the least. Many purists poo poo the new look as it moves from front engine to mid engine design and the changes necessary to make the car work.

If interested, here goes,. They kept the 6.2 liter V8, pushing close to 500hp and 500 torque they are achieving sub 3 second 0 to 60 times. 50% stiffer chassis than ever before and an 8 speed dct transmission. The car come with a front suspension that will raise up to get over challenging driveways ect for such a low car. What is even more impressive is that when you push the button to raise the front, the car will ask you if it wants this spot to be remembered. If you select yes, the car will automatically raise anytime it approaches that location and it has the capability to remember up to 1000 separate locations.

The biggest surprise of the night was that the entry level price will be just under $60,000. The question in my mind will be if the dealers do LOA add on stickers to the price.

Mid Engine plus Dual Clutch Transmission  ...looks awesome.
The Euro Exotics and the not so exotic like the Porsche Boxster will choke on the Corvette price point.
Why buy a (VW)Boxster with questionable long term reliability when you can have this.
I guess it's time to buy that lottery ticket.

I don't know how people who live in snowy winters deal with it (other than to not drive it those months).

And I don't have a garage, and every fall the acorns rain on my vehicles. 

And I really don't care to relive my youth going to court on all my moving violations and performance awards again (how can you drive one like grandma all the time????)

I think they said 12 different exterior colors, 6 interior colors and 3 seat options. Something for everybody!

Why? Because half the current corvette owners are not interested in the mid engine!

There was an article on Fox news about it only having an 8sp DCT.

They said if a driver holds both paddles down on the steering column, it puts the car in neutral and then he can still rev the engine up (like it has a clutch).

  Sweet car! I'm a vette guy, own a Classic 70 Stingray but like the looks of this version. Heck, I like most versions well, the 80-90's version were nasty.  Sorry if you own one.

I think since DCT means dual clutch transmission, about the only thing to miss is the clutch pedal. Good enough for Ferrari it's good enough for me. I have a 6 speed and it's great fun but I would probably kick it to the curb for an 8 speed dct.

I have access to that whenever I wanna play with it (It's my father in law's, lives about 10 minutes from me.) but..... it's an automatic.... I'd MUCH rather drive my 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 liter V6 with a 6 speed manual.... No, it's not as fast, but a Valkyrie isn't as fast as a Hayabusa either, but it's a heluva lot more fun to drive!

To each their own and all that, but they're REALLY missing out by making it two pedals only.....

I wonder if I can get the GM employee purchase price on one?  I highly doubt it but never know maybe bring it down to 50K??      still about 15K over my price range though..

amazes me how pricey new trucks can become some msrp of 80K or so all decked out.  I would be afraid to put a scratch in any truck over 40K which is almost a base/midlevel trim nowadays.

Took them long enough to finally give us a mid-engine vette.  GM tease us with the Pontiac Fiero.

There were two Chevrolet Astro concepts: the Corvair-based 1967 Astro I and the V8-powered Astro II, and the latter had intriguing potential as a production Corvette. Officially designated XP-880 and introduced at the 1968 New York Auto Show, the Astro II utlilized a Chevy big-block V8 reversed in the chassis to drive a Pontiac Tempest transaxle. With its backbone chassis and two-speed automatic drivetrain, the Astro II wasn't especially road-friendly and Chevrolet engineers returned to the drawing board.

Probably the most famous of the Corvette mid-engine prototypes is the Aerovette. Originally constructed in 1969 as the XP-882 with a big-block Chevy V8 and Olds Toronado final drive mounted transversely behind the driver, it was then repurposed in 1973 as the Four-Rotor Corvette and equipped with GM Wankel rotary power. But with the demise of the GM Wankel program, a small-block LT1 V8 was dropped in and the Aerovette achieved its final form. Today the concept, still stunning after all these years, can be seen at the GM Heritage Collection in suburban Detroit and at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Yeppers, in total, I've owned 19 different Pontiac Fieros.   Have done almost every swap out there from 4 cyl. to V6, V6 to DOHC V6, V6 to Supercharged V6 and I4 and V6 to V8,   Fun little cars to autocross.   Still have two of them.  The folks on my Fiero Forum are saying that GM brought in the Fiero's big brother.

(Old school MR2 guy... Drove 'em as my daily driver for nearly 20 years, and miss them terribly now, but not the best car for a family of 6, so I stick to the bikes for my fun...)

And the folks on the MR2 forums are mostly not impressed (Especially about the automatic only) but on the bright side, are hoping it'll drive the better companies to make a better product for a more reasonable price (New Supra, and rumor'ed new MR2, we're looking at you!)

  A lot of folks that drive fast rides at the autocross track rolled their eyes when I drove in with my "adapted" Pontiac Fiero.   They took notice and wanted to look under the deck lid when my times were better than theirs.   While admittedly, there is always someone faster, not very many cars can stay with that 3800SC Fiero on the autocross track.   Handles like it's on rails, stops on a dime (has a C4 Vette brake conversion) and accelerates with the best of them with sticky tires.    This is the car Pontiac should have built and sold.   But, I also admit that I have way too much money invested in that car.   
Yeah, type as slow as you wish but bring that MR2 on.

In WI though only able to drive it 8  months of the year or so would not be fully worth it if unable to drive year round.  Much like my neighbor down the street has a decked out black/blue striped Camaro parked in his garage seems like 11 of the 12 months of the year.  Why?  To admire it in the garage for 11 months?  I may have more cycles than I need sitting in my garage, but all combined are not worth the price of that newer Camaro. 

even for 60K that vette is a very good deal and bet the base model is all I would really need anyways since pretty sure it will even have leather and power drivers seat as standard eqmt. along with the normal V8 and AC, cruise, tilt, power windows/locks.  What more do you need?

Always find it funny when Dodge Ram advertises on TV their 12 inch touch screen being the ONLY one who has that 12 inch size.  Like I care if 7 inch or 12 inch?  Yah, that is what she said....

More leg room than any other vehicle I've ever sat in, although I'll admit it did look quite comical seeing me fold in or fold out of it. Especially with my MKI (The smaller style, 1988) model when me and my 6'4" dad went somewhere we got a lot of funny looks.

Not that we get a lot of the winter stuff here, but when we did the MR2s handled it really well, with a 43/57 weight distribution and the engine sitting over the drive wheels...

Dodge Ram advertises on TV their 12 inch touch screen being the ONLY one who has that 12 inch size.  Like I care if 7 inch or 12 inch?

In the late 90's I helped my son, about 17 at the time, buy his first car. A 1990 Mr2. It was in great shape and he learned to drive a 5 speed in that car. What was unique to that vehicle was I had a prior connection to it. I was working for a Toyota dealer when that car was new and drove it some as a demo model. The dealership owner eventually took it for his daughter to drive. At some point down the road it was sold to the lady who we bought the car. Didn't know all the history until we went to look at and buy the car. I really liked the ergonomics and the handling. My son put about 120,000 miles on it and later sold it on to another enthusiast.

Well, I just went out in the shop and walked around 6 of them with the camo removed.  They are not in any way even close to resembling a Fiero (structurally).  A fine looking vehicle for what seems to be a decent price for the performance.  I look forward to driving one.

I read the new  Corvette will share a 750 hp supercharged motor with a new Cadillac...for my C5 Zo6 $12k will get a 650hp supercharged motor installed here in Dallas...all the more to keep Serk awake at nite on the George Bush Freeway by his house ---my wife says my Valk running an open Viking Header hitting 7,400 RPM w/a Dyna 3000 is the loudest thing on the nearby freeway

seems gm has changed its mind. Latest is they will discontinue the front engine model and only offer the mid engine model.
