That would be awesome.  Only been to Alaska once, and that was a refueling stop on the flight over the top to the war.  Bought a souvenir in the airport gift shop - an indigenous native-carved ivory pepper grinder I gave to the now-deceased ex - would have liked it back but it's not to be.  Anywho, imagine a ferry trip though the inward passage around Canada so one could bring his carry and enjoy the passage.  On my bucket list.  Though totally impractical for an Inzane.

Sadly, the building was never looked after when the Army left Whittier. It's been in pretty bad shape for a long time. It always gave me the creeps whenever I was in Whittier. It reminded me of those old films you see of dilapidated buildings in the old Soviet Union. General Buckner made quite a mark on Alaska. Many things were named after him. As a teenager, me and my buddies would go out to the "Buckner Fieldhouse" on Fort Rich and play racquetball. After his assignment in Alaska he was put in charge of the Okinawa invasion. He was killed there.

another piece of trivia about Whittier. Used to be the only way there was on the train. Either as a passenger or you could drive your vehicle up a dirt ramp onto a railroad flat car. I never took my bike over though. They used to (probably still do) get some crazy amount of snow. Sometimes it would feel like you were in tunnels thru the snow. I don't remember ever being there and it being sunny, if it wasn't raining or snowing, it was socked in with clouds.
