Knocking Noise when started in the Morning with this Cold Weather

My 1998 will make a knocking noise if I start it i the morning with no choke on in this cold 30's degree weather.  Never did this before.
I noticed if I put the chock on and then start it, I do not hear the knocing noise.

I use Amsoil Synthetic 10 x 30 oil with a Honda Filter. 
Oil was changed about 500 miles ago.

Any ideas why it would knock when cold and no choke, and what should I do to eliminate this problem.

Use the firkin choke.

Think what you are hearing is it gasping for GAS.....

I agree 100% with RJ.  Use the choke.   I have had roughly 11 Honda motorcycles and every one, including the 2 Valks I have now, have been cold blooded and I have had to use the choke on every one of them.  Even in the summer.  But, it seems if I start it again before it has completely cooled down, then the choke is not necessary.

Agree with both responders.

Without the choke in the cold conditions, 1 or more cylinders is not getting enough fuel to fire. That is why you are hearing the "knock". It is compression knock (without fire).

Mostly because the RPM's are to low.

Got to keep that baby turning!
