Gas tank lid issue

I am having issues with my gas tank lid/cover. When I turn the key to open the lid, the cover does not pop up, it stays flush with the chrome cover on the tank. I took the chrome cover off and lubricated the cable and release mechanism,  but the cover still does not pop all the way up. Is there an easy fix for this or will I have to remove the radiator  cowl/pod and fight with all those dam  fasteners/plastic??

I had the same problem.
When I took the cover assembly apart to remove tank and change air filter, I cleaned all the old, sticky grease out where the cable attaches to it and it worked great when I re-assembled it. I took pictures while I was taking it apart so I wouldn't forget how to put it back together.

Thanks guys. I did clean and lube the mechanisms on top of the tank. I guess now I will have to remove all that plastic to check out the area where you insert  the key.

A follow up:  I removed  the plastic cover  which  houses the key hole to unlock my gas cap. Everything looked ok, so I just lubed the cable and replaced the plastic cover. I then removed the chrome cover that houses the gas cap and gas lid mechanism. There was no build up of dirt or grease on the release latch. However, I did clean it off and lightly greased the latch. I also slightly loosened the Allen screw which holds the latch in place.  I then lightly greased the hinge on the gas cap chrome cover.  My gas lid now pops up like new. Thanks guys.

Mine sticks every once and a while.
If it does, a light push down and it opens.
