on my recent ride. I went for a week but came home after 2 days. There was a weird vibration that I couldn't identify the source of but I knew it wasn't right.


Knowing BigBF was going to be working on my bike doing the timing belts I figured I'd let the Valkyrie whisperer take a look see. The seal had broken.

When the bike didn't "feel" right I made sure to be gentle on the throttle. At one point I had a Yugo take me at a stop light.

How many miles since you did a rear end check?    Did you put grease on the pinion before re-installing it when you did your last rear end job?   Just curious.

About 10,000 miles ago with a new rear tire.

Everything was cleaned and relubed.

I've seen so many of those desert red clay dust pictures of the drive unit here over the years (but never in my bikes).  It's like an archaeology dig exhibit.

So that's what happens when water gets down in there (for a long or short time)?

        Come on Paul a yugo that's still running? REALLY?  Yes I duz have first hand experience with a-sigh-yugo!  We had two sayings when I was still racing That are applicable here in our current world. Either that sounds Expensive. Or that Smells expensive. We can add a third. That Looks expensive!  I'm with Jess-seen a Lot of those desert red pics since I've been here. But-knock on wood-not mine. Hope not mine continues. New parts all the way round plenty of Good Lube knees in da breeze afore ya knows it!  RIDE SAFE.

    Same thing happened to me,   but the good news is that those parts-  the drive shaft with a revised part number, the seal and pinion cup are still less than a regular motorcycle drive chain..!   And that hole visible in the shot is important to keep clear and open, since it lets gear lube from the rear end get in there.
    Now I check it every tire swap.

Just over 80,000 miles.

That seal needs to be replaced regularly, since it begins to harden up  after about 10 years.And then it  works loose from where  it should be, and the result is what you see in the photos

I hate it when that happens!
