Does anyone know what metal the valve covers are made of?

Just of interest why? You trying to paint them or something like that?

Alien

No, I want to get the chrome stripped off, braze on some fins and polish them.  Something like the finned aluminum valve covers on hot rods.

save time and money by not having to strip off the chrome, pick up a pair of Goldwing GL1500 covers. get the bolts with them.  early yrs are more squared off then the valkyrie covers which should help.

I thought about that but the ones I've seen have too many details, notches and slots on the face.

Keep us posted on your progress. Very interested to see how they look.
