The trunk on my '99 Interstate unlocks, but it doesn't "pop up" a tad like my prior one did. As in, I turn the key to unlock, then while it's unlocked I have to use my other hand to pull the trunk open, otherwise it relocks as soon as I let the key return.

Before I tear into the mechanism, which doesn't look like it's simple or easy to get to, anyone seen this before and is there a "Oh yeah, do this and it's fixed in 30 seconds" trick I should know about?

Thanks again!

Hey, my 99 IS trunk lid doesn't popup when I turn the key.  Never has since I got her in '08.

Normally don't lock it, so just use the lever underneath to open it.  No popping when I turn the lever either.

I'm guessing that the seal has collapsed and no longer provides any tension on the latch. When I got my 99 I/S it was the same way and the lid would rattle going down the road. After replacing the seal, I had to push down aggressively on the lid to get it to latch and would pop up slightly when I pulled the lever. YMMV  Wink

Interesting, I'd assumed there was a spring mechanism in the latch that popped it up, but the seal being flattened after 21 years makes sense.

I see the OEM piece has been discontinued and appears to be unobtanium (81545-MBY-000), any suggestions, ideas, etc on a good replacement? Just a generic weather seal I assume, or anything to look for?

Thanks!

I would get some of that rubber door/window weatherstripping. Some that is small enough to fit under/behind the OEM seal as to not be noticed.

Better yet maybe to put some on the lid itself, where it mates with the seal. As long as you can get it to stick.

Woot! I happened to have a package of the rubber foam weather stripping that's sticky on one side, put a 9 inch or so piece on the outer bottom lip of the truck, and now the trunk has a positive "Pop" open when I unlock it.

I'll let the adhesive set with the lid closed for a bit, and if it's looking like it'll work long term, I'll trim the little bit of excess that's visible off with a utility knife.

Thanks for the ideas! Glad I asked instead of tearing the trunk apart to troubleshoot it!

When I got my interstate. the first thing I noticed was all the creaking and rattling of the truck lid and speaker panels when going over bumps.  I added small O rings under the speaker panel screws and weather stripping under the trunk, no more rattles.

You can also adjust the hook part on the lid up a little bit, then it will seal tighter and pop when you open it. I had to adjust mine to help stop the rattle.

After 10's of 1,000's miles on horrible NJ roads, I noticed the latch, hinge and chain screws would get lose, I put lock tight on them and tightened them up. It did nothing to help it pop up, but it did end the rattle.

When I worked on over the road semi's . the door seals on the storage compartment would start to leak.
The cure that was better than new gaskets ( which usually leaked until settled in) would be to clean the seal / gasket and dry. then put a bead of black silicone on and smooth out , cover with plastic (saran) wrap and close the door. Let it set a day or more and then carefully remove the plastic wrap.
I used this method on a show car with a "T" top. the repair was barely visible.

One other remedy that I used many years ago for rattling hinges was to take the hinge off and bend the pin just enough to take the slack out. Rest the ends of the hinge on something solid and strike in the middle with a cold chisel and hammerl. That pin is stiff.

A long time ago, but I believe I got the idea from the VRCC board. It has worked great for years. cooldude

Along the back of the weather seal around the trunk you'll see the split seam where they come together.    Take some vacuum line that will just slide inside the hollow weather striping around to just past the curve and then feed it into the other side.    No need to cut the tubing, one continuous piece.

You may need to lube the tubing or squirt something inside the weather strip so that the rubber vacuum line will slide.

Will provide the tension you're looking for and stop the rattle of the hinges.

You sir are a genius! I love being able to combine my hobbies, got some airline tubing from my aquariums, and some lube used to run Ethernet cables through walls, put 'em together, ran the airline hose through the weather seal, and the trunk nicely pops up now. The Weather stripped I'd put on was working, but kinda ugly, this solution works great and is totally invisible...

Thanks!

(And thanks to all, seriously!)

That is a great idea, thanks for sharing Alan.
