Back in the early days of Bitcoin a guy mined up 7,002 bitcoins.

He put 'em in a wallet on an Ironkey USB device and forgot about them, they were basically worthless at the time, however 7,002 BTC has a current value of around $220 million.

IronKey USB drives are encrypted, you have to enter a password to get in to the data, they also have a self-destruct mechanism; put the wrong password in 10 times and the device irrevocably destroys itself.

He lost the piece of paper that he wrote the password down on, and has tried 8 times unsuccessfully to unlock the device.

I've gotten second hand anxiety for the guy just thinking about that situation...

Sucks to be him right now.... He should have stuck to his usual flow of passwords.

That piece of paper maybe shoulda been in a safe deposit box or safe somewhere?  I sincerely hope this guy isn't married.  It won't be lived down.    :-[

I don't trust my memory for important data like passwords.  Don't trust password manager aps either.  All you need is for a hacker to figure out how to crack that ap.  Having been a programmer and systems analyst, I designed my own password store and access ap with security.  And backed it up in multiple places.  And do not keep it on a phone.  And won't divulge it's design or location anywhere.  Funny to me, when companies mismanage my logon and lose the PW, their recovery option is called "forgot password".  Sorry, wasn't me idiots.  YOU GUYS FUBAR'D IT UP.
