WAYNE A. DOENGES, 91, was reunited with his beloved wife in his heavenly home on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019, after a brief struggle with cancer. Born in Fort Wayne, he was the only son of the late Christian and Emma Doenges. He married his wife, Phyllis, in Nov. of 1955 and, shortly thereafter, moved to New Haven. Wayne retired from Magnavox where he was an Associate Environment Engineer. He had a long-standing community service career with the City of New Haven. His hobbies included shooting sports, teaching gun safety, photography and motorcycling. He was a Korean War veteran and an active member of Fort Wayne's Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 133. He also had the privilege of participating in the Northeast Indiana's "Honor Flight" in April of 2016. He is survived by three sons, Wayne P. (Vickie) Doenges, Mark (Twila) Doenges, and Chris (Jeanie) Doenges; daughter, Cheri (Greg) Umphrey; and grandson, Scott Umphrey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; and four sisters, Eileen Huffman, Dorothy Graef, Helen Stabler and Luella Erickson.

The American Flag was proudly flown for this Veteran.  Rest in peace.

I think about your Dad almost every day Chris. I was proud to call him "friend" and to be included in his circle of friends. He helped keep my brain active, we could sit in his living room and talk about almost any subject. He was a special person.

        As daprez stated-An HONOR to be a Small part of the Honor Escort for Wayne. I would believe that Ross and I were there as Friends Patriots and as Patriot Guard Riders. Ross and I amongst Many others thatTruly Miss this MAN. RIDE SAFE.

Wayne, a good friend indeed. We had this little celebration of sorts, one last tip of the glass, shortly before he left us. It was a replay of time spent on his balcony at the first Michigan InZane. A treasured picture indeed.

One of the things I like to do is to pay honor to those who were the founders of the VRCC by visiting when I am near their area.  In 2019, my wife and I were visiting Cincinnati for a Ventriloquist's convention (she is - I am not) and I took the opportunity to drive to New Haven, Indiana and visit with Solo1 (Wayne) as I was aware he was of failing health and a visit then was of utmost importance.  I arrived and met with Mark, we talked a bit and then I visited with Wayne.  I told him of how much I enjoyed his writing and reminded him of the first time we had met at the 2nd Michigan Inzane.  I did not want to tire him out so the visit was short and I gave him a VRCC hat from the last Inzane as I left.

I took no pictures and really haven't talked about the visit, as it was pretty special to me but this is the memorial page, so am talking about it.  Wayne was a veteran, involved in his community, a wonderful storyteller and a husband and father.  He was a good man and if you haven't gotten a copy of his book "Solo 1's Meandering Thoughts on Life, Roads and Family", you should.
