I got an ebay one, I picked one that the paint looked good on.

Our starters are basically indestructible. Used ones are good. I bet DDT's is
original.

I ruined mine by trying to loosen the starter wire lock nut without
using a low-profile wrench to hold the lower nut. It wrung off the
plastic part inside. That plastic part is almost the only part inside
the starter that isn't a replaceable (no part number on the fiche) part.

Most of the parts for the starter are still available... maybe you could fix
yours?

Agreed.  They were designed to move a fully loaded GL1500 in reverse.

If you have an Automotive electric shop nearby that rebuilds alternators and starters, give them a call.  There's nothing magical about it.

I'm not 100% sure what's wrong with mine.

It acts like there is a "dead spot" in it.

Most of the time it works just fine.

But other times it refuses to engage until I bump the engine over a little bit, then it turns just fine.


It did this on me Sunday leaving a restaurant.

I restarted the bike several times after I got home with it.

It started fine but the starter was making a noise that I haven't heard before.

I have a couple in stock.

On my 8N (8Ns in general, and maybe even "stuff" in general, ida know)
the ring gear would generally stop at the same place every time. The starter
would engage on the same few teeth right there pretty much every time.
Those teeth wore down on the ring gear and after a while my tractor
did like your bike is doing. It is a drag bumping the engine over a little bit
on an old tractor :-) ... I'd put it in gear and grab the lugs on the rear tire
and grunt it through a couple of teeth...

Anywho, I eventually got my tractor broken in two to get the ring gear
replaced...

Sure you didn't have a hydro lock and broken some gear teeth off?

I would suggest to remove the starter first, and have a look inside.

I found a new aftermarket starter on Ebay for $120 with free shipping.

My mechanic looked it up and said that his cost would've been $175.

While this is everyone's worst nightmare, I don't believe that it is what's going on here.

The bike has had this issue intermittently since I bought it.

I've put almost 30k miles on it since, including a trip to Yellowstone NP and back in 2019.

Big BF checked it out when he rebuilt the carbs and didn't think that it was an issue.

He rebuilt the petcock when he rebuilt the carbs so it should also be good.

It's starting fine now but the starter makes a rattling sound when it kicks in.

I'm just waiting for my mechanic to get the time to replace the starter for me.

I had the "dead spot" problem on a Honda 900.  There was an open in the motor armature.  If the starter motor came to rest in one segment of it's rotation, it would not work.  A replacement armature from a used starter made it work.  It was easy to install a rebuild kit while everything was apart.

My guess is that the problem here is something similar.

I'm going to get the old starter rebuilt in order to have a spare.

I'll post what they found to be wrong with it when I do.

************ UPDATE ***********

The starter has been replaced.

The old one wasn't fried but it does show signs of wear.

There is still a rattling sound when the bike is first started.

Mechanic looked inside while the starter was out and there's no indication of any hydrolock issues.

He's pretty sure that the starter clutch is going bad.

Labor to replace is pretty extensive.

This will most likely be a fall project.

Find a local shop that rebuilds starters and altetnators.
Probably just needs brushes.
Learned this year's ago with my muscle cars.
Cheap and easy.
