Batteries Hard To Find?

Murphy and his law at work!  I agreed to get photos of my Valkyrie done and sent to the person who wants buy it.  No problem, right?  Ease it back onto our sloped driveway, give it a quick shower, and shoot away.

But I learned a long time ago that I can't push this bike back up the driveway and into the garage by myself.  So I always start it before I ease it out of the garage (No start = Don't move).  So I went to start it and got the dreaded sound of the battery dumping the last of what it has in it.  The battery wouldn't take and hold a charge.

So I called my dealer and the parts guy said, "Oh....we haven't got one and can't get one until, maybe, April."  Okay, then.  Try to pull together "Plan B."  Nope!  No batteries anywhere in town.  So I started searching the internet.  Three hours later I have one of the last OEM batteries on its way from Amazon (grrrr...).

The moral of the story seems to be this - if you think you will need a new battery for your Valkyrie any time soon, start the hunt as soon as you can.  It seems like all of the Valkyrie batteries manufactured in the Pennsylvania area (i.e., the U.S.A.) are in short supply.

This spring I had a battery on order for about 3 weeks before I found one at a Honda dearer 40 miles away.
So it's been a problem for a while now.

Think outside the dealer box. I had the same issue earlier this year. I discovered Batteries Plus had several different brands and price points for the Valkyrie IN STOCK. I thought this place was just for watch and phone batteries. I was impressed and the price was inline with other sources.

 Other options, Amazon and Walmart both delivered to your door. Battery prices have gone up like everything else.

I was able to sneak mine in without removing the seats. Like replacing a 1500 alternator or driveshaft. It will only fit when you find the right angle, then it slides right in like magic.

You are braver then me. I would stand on the side cover if I left it on the floor.

I bought a Mighty Max YTX20L-BS GEL Battery at Walmart.com for $60.  Delivered in 2 days.

I keep a battery maintainer on just about everything that has a battery at my place, the exception being my Ram 3500 and my wife's Honda Ridgeline.   They both get enough activity that the battery stays charged.   Since I've gotten the Valk Trike I've ridden it a bunch and the two wheeler not nearly as much.   Regardless they both have battery tenders on them.

I still start everything and let it warm up to operating temp about every other week.   Both Valks, the zero turn mower, the Kubota tractor, everything gets run up to operating temp at least twice a month.   Knowing I wanted to ride my two wheeler last week, I started it and did my normal thing.

But, I got distracted when I shut it down and used the run/off switch on the handle bars to kill it.   That distraction (and my two working memory cells) allowed me to walk off and not turn the key switch off.   The next morning, I barely got a grunt from the old girl.   No start, no joy.   Started looking for a battery, No at Walmart, no at O'Riley's, no at another couple of parts stores so, I ended up at Advance Auto and of course, they only had one and it was their most expensive battery.  

$124 + tax.   I was pissed, the Wally World version was about half that price with the same warranty.

But, it is, what it is.   I knew that battery was "elderly".   If I hadn't left that key on, it would have lasted quite a bit longer.   I'd like to say Live and Learn but, that may not be accurate in my case.

those duracell batteries at batteries plus are good batteries not cheap though.  Stay clear of their cheapo brand batteries do not ask me how I know only lasting 1-2 years tops.

I guess amazon.com no longer has YUASA batteries then?   That is where I bought my last 2 from and am sure due again been 5 years or so now.

I took a chance buying autocraft battery last time at advanced auto parts/carquest and got 15-20 percent off but IMO that one is not holding a charge very well and newest one.   

I talked to them about batteries and they said none of their batteries are lasting worth a hoot anymore they think has to do with the less amount of LEAD plates built into them now cheapening them up yet increasing the pricing as with anything else bought nowadays.

Do not feel bad,  I called a few local Toyota dealers wanting to get OEM brake pads and rotors for both front/rear and they came back that 3 of the 4 needed are on backorder and NO idea when coming in.  So, what if they have a customer needing pads/rotors in their service dept?  Sorry,  go buy aftermarket I guess?    The pricing OEM parts is over 500 bucks total and thru rockauto.com I can get RAYBESTOS brand rotors/pads for 280 delivered to my door so at near 1/2 price worth taking a chance IMO go aftermarket???????????????

I got a YUASA GYZ20HL last July.  Slightly more CCA than the stock GYZ20L.  It required straightening out one of the cable ends to fit.
