Desmog kit

Has anyone used the desmog kit from viper?

It's not that hard to put it together yourself.  I got my freeze plugs at a machine shop and got some sheet steel @ Lowe's to make the block off plates.

I just desmogged both Valks this year and all I bought each time was:
(4) Soft Plugs   $1.00
(1) Redeye OEM Replacement Petcock Vacuum Line $7.99
(1) Set of  3 Redeye Vacuum Caps $2.99
I also added the Redeye Fuel Line Disconnect for $18.99, which isn't necessary but I find it a great convenience. Depending on the age and/or condition you may need two new Honda OEM gaskets #17142-MN5-000 at $2.50 each.

I followed Normand of Quexpress's directions at

which made it a piece of cake. I believe the Viper system retains the ability to restore the system to original but without a doubt I'm not going back and I wanted all that junk "outa here".

I agree with the boys.. Read Normands [Quexpress] article and buy all the stuff locally.. Its easy and cheap,,errrr,, inexpensive..

It is easy to desmog without a kit. Just read the ShopTalk writeup, go to Lowes to get some aluminum bar
stock, go the the otter-parts store to get some gasket material, spend a couple of hours out in the yard
with some vise-grips and a dremel tool fabricating the block-off plates from the bar stock, hunt all over the place
for the right size freeze plugs and some decent vacuum caps  Boom - two week's work, tops.

All I did was cut the end piece off of the tube, filled it with JB weld and put it back on the next day. Making a blocker plate is a lot of work.

Making my two blocker plates took about 5 minutes. Got some 1/8" aluminium, used the new gasket as a template and drew on the ally and a dremel with a cutoff disc made short order of cutting the plate to shape, touched up the ends on my disc sander and drilled the holes. 5 minutes for the two tops.

I was wondering what the Euro Valkyries used for the block off since the Euro model come from the factory without the smog stuff.  Unless I misunderstood a previous post.

European models do not have the secondary air supply system for reduce engine emissions.


BUT we have something you do not have...
Throttle Position Sensor  (TPS)
It's purpose is to tell the ignition when to advance the timing.

It's even simpler if you crimp the end of the cut tube and bend the tube over a bit. Not rocket science here!  There is no detriment to a bad job and any kind of leak would be inconsequential.

Same with the freeze plugs. Gently installed they suffice and will stay put. No need to hammer them down to the bottom of the hole! Nothing to be gained by that last bit of hammering!

You'll have a lot of hose after removing all the smog stuff. Very simple to fashion some kind of blocker for the end of each hose, you need to use, to close off the now unused barb on the intake runner.

The only things to buy are the freeze plugs and they're three for a dollar.

Oh Please.  As Colin said, it takes about 5 minutes to make both block off plates.  I didn't use a gasket.  I used hi temp silicone.  Once everything was buttoned back up, I was able to start the bike and ride away.  No waiting for JB Weld to dry and set.

It's easy to understand your pride of accomplishment here    although it's clear to me there's some acceptable level of exaggeration    going on here.

And as a note here: Was that before or after you made the trip to Lowes?  The five minutes I mean!
