I was in Naples FL (and Marco Island) during Christmas with my folks 3-4 times as a young teenager.  When it was still considered rural.

What I always though was funny was:  You could always tell the tourists from the locals, because all the (extremely pale) tourists were in shorts and bathing suits and all the locals were wearing winter coats looking funny at us.

The other thing in FL I found amazing was it was the only place I ever visited that had liquor stores and topless dancing in the same building.  (and they wouldn't let me in)  We don't care if you've got money or not kid, you're only 13.  

They say the sharks are worse on the Atlantic side than the Gulf side, but I think the pool is the better bet anyway.
