Alternator trouble

Got an 99' IS with an AGM battery In it. Less than 2 years old. The bike did good over the weekend, going 750 miles between Friday-Sunday. Bike gets used every day. Hit 96k miles recently. Headed to Tampa for the evening, overheat light comes on and dash goes out as I use my right blinker. Pull over and it won't Rev high. Shut it off and that was it. Wouldn't start. All fluids good. Def electrical. My buddy came and got me, no worries.

I ordered dampeners and a brush set.. I was told that since on my road trip it was ok (weak to start once or twice) that it was probably doing intermittent connection as the brushes were just barely touching.

Middle bolt is galding so I might helicoil it but I have brushes, dampeners, and a new alt coming (old bike with 20k miles).

What do you all think

I replaced my brushes at 96k miles or so, going strong 10k miles later.
Cheap and doable if you are careful and can solder.

Mine were pigtail-length limited, so make the new brush pigtails slightly longer for more longevity.

  Nobody hates you, I'm a cynical old guy, Democrat, and broke too. Keep posting with your alternator progress. If you have some left handed drills you might be able to get the rest of the bolt out with them. Sometimes the heat from drilling will loosen the bolt and because you are drilling in the direction that extracts the bolt it will spin out. Good Luck.

Some have just put the alt back in with those two bolts only. So far I don't recall anyone posting an issue yet.
