Stock tanks are not black inside. Has the tank been refined by a Prev owner?

I bought bike new, tank was shiny before I cleaned it. just had some rust a bottom of tank at strainer so I bought some thing that someone used on this site. their tank looked nice and clean from their pictures . mine turn a dark brown to black color . did the cleaning twice sill no better. so put it back in service.

I used some stuff from auto parts store in the 70's to clean some rusty car parts. Turned the surface black. Painted over it, no problem. I think it was QssPho or OssPhoss. Probably not legal now-a-days.   ;D

edit: This stuff sounds like it, Ospho. I guess I was wrong.

That's happened to me, too on a different part.   But the -phos , or '-fos' thing probably means it's a phosphate  compound , and like those 'phosphate coated' drywall nails- it's flat black.    Probably won't corrode, though.
