Non-Valk Definition of the Term GEAR in Building Electrical Supply

I tired to look this up on line and found nothing.  Thought I'd try here.

Daughter works overseeing/managing Hotels.  She has one that is under construction.   It is behind schedule.  When she confronted the construction contractor about why he said it was because they were waiting on a GEAR.  The GEAR is suppose to be needed to install the electrical supply system for the hotel.

The term makes no sense to me but it might be related to "computer" stuff that controls the electrical supply system.

My knowledge of that is that the supply is sort of simple.  Put in a transformer, wire the thing in and you are done.   It may sound simple but....

So, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks Serk.....  I was thinking specifically about the term GEAR and failed to put the word switch in front of it.

Switch Gear is the term most probably .

Gear could just mean "stuff" too.

Whatever it is, supply chain delays exist in every aspect of US business these days.

My new next door neighbor just had a massive new driveway prepared, but it's going to be awhile before the concrete arrives.

I'm so glad I got my last new truck in 2018.  Paid $26.5K and today, if you can find one, they're $47K and up (with only minor changes).

GEAR UP has similar BUT different meanings depending on How and Who applied to. I KNOW my Brother Ross-daprez-when I work with/for him on an outside job he has different tool boxes for carpentry electrical or plumbing. Attempting to put A GEAR in context with electrical system(s) migh give give ya a case of w t f over?  :2funny: RIDE SAFE.

Running behind schedule is getting worse in construction. Supply issues are popping up all over. What's worse is many times the start of construction is delayed which causes ripple effects down the line and project managers and owners simply don't want to deal with or accept as true and keep pressure on the subs so they can "make up time" and still hit the target date of opening.

We've had masons and carpenters who can't adhere to "hold to" rough opening size specs. We've been summoned to job sites by supers saying they're ready for us only to get there and nothing is ready or close for us to get final measurements. Their answers are usually "the opening sizes are on the prints" just adhere to those sizes...which doesn't work when fabricating frames and ordering specific glass sizes to fit those openings in frames. We've been delayed months on some jobs by other contractors and when we finally get there we're on the hot seat for holding up the job while they continue to add change orders and other requests or decisions from the architect.

I know the supply thing is something new.  Don't know about the other stuff.

My daughter has had many of the issues you identified above in what she is charged with overseeing/supervising.

I have only been involved in one construction project (well I was there when they bull two nuclear power plants but not directly involved in the actual "construction", just make sure I knew how it worked or was suppose to work) and that was my house.

The only parts that someone else did was the plumbing, sewer and HVAC.  And I have some "interesting" stories about the inspection process.

I think, in this case, the contractor was giving her a line of crap in an attempt to get her to leave them alone.   Turns out the device (what ever it was) was not ready for shipment and, in fact, not even "produced" yet.

That's what it sounds like to me as well, I got carried away with the other stuff.

I think "Gear" is just a catch all word. Like Gear up, fishing gear, 1st gear, grab your gear. To me it just means "stuff". If they were waiting on Gear, they didn't have all the "stuff" to do the job.

You know that could be it.......

Just not the way I was trained.   Plan a project.  Set milestones.  Identify needed goods and services and the dates needed.  Track all activities.  Step in before deadlines are not met not after.

However, what I said above does not always work in very, very large projects, like building a nuclear power plant.  Strange thing about that process.   The Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) was (at the time) always a standard.  The real problems came because all the utilities wanted to build their own secondary systems.  ....  Never really understood that but..... and yes I have recently slept in a Holiday Inn.

And just in case....

All boils down to-supply chain issues! And most of us here KNOW how when and where THAT started! RIDE SAFE.
