Is this Carbs, or Vacuum leak?

I haven't been able to ride for a several years, and trying to get the bike running again to see if I can still ride...  I can get her running at idle, and can accelerate slowly to about 2000rpm, but if I try to twist the throttle, she dies.  I've never rebuilt the petcock (as far as I remember), and picked up a rebuild kit and replacement vacuum lines. Before I venture into this, I wanted to ask folks smarter than me; does this sound like petcock and vacuum, or does it sound like carbs?  Thanks in advance!

Howdy Timbo!

Rebuilding the petcock is a fairly easy procedure once the tank is removed.  It's four screws. 
The number six vacuum line (left side rear) operates the system.  If that vacuum line is bad, then the valve would stay off and the bike would not run.

But...if the cover set is bad, then the system would leak fuel enough to start, then not open enough while running which would starve the engine at higher RPM's.

If it were me, I'd do the simplest thing first...replace the cover set (re-build the petcock), replace the vacuum lines, then see how she reacts.

As old as these bikes are getting, a good carb cleaning is probably in your future.  It's not as hard as you think!

Thank you for the feedback.  I'll update when we have the petcock rebuilt and vacuum lines replaced.  Hope all is going well for you...it's been too long since we saw you.  Hope all is well!

Petcock rebuilt.  We tried to replace all the vacuum hoses, but once we got the airbox out, we couldn't see where all the vacuum lines go...looked like we needed to go deeper than just the airbox.  After many choice words getting that airbox back in, I'm happy I didn't try to go deeper today. 

Same issue....cranks up and will idle, but will die if you try to give it gas.  Opened the gas lock...same issue.  I'll attack it another day.  July is HOT in my garage.  I used to be able to tolerate this heat.  I don't know if age makes me smarter or just more wimpy with the heat.

#1, #2 & #5 are plugged.  #2 & #3 connect to a "T" fitting.  The "T" fitting goes to the Pair Valve.  #6 goes to the petcock.  That's it for vacuum lines.

Yeah, the heat has been getting to me, too!  Gotta get stuff done early in the morning...or suffer the consequences...
