WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed legislation Friday to revive a ban on semi-automatic guns, the first vote of its kind in years and a direct response to the firearms often used in the crush of mass shootings ripping through communities nationwide.

Once banned in the U.S., the high-powered firearms are now widely blamed as the weapon of choice among young men responsible for many of the most devastating mass shootings. But Congress allowed the restrictions first put in place in 1994 on the manufacture and sales of the weapons to expire a decade later, unable to muster the political support to counter the powerful gun lobby and reinstate the weapons ban.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed the vote toward passage in the Democratic-run House, saying the earlier ban "saved lives."

The House legislation is shunned by Republicans, who dismissed it as an election-year strategy by Democrats. Almost all Republicans voted against the bill, which passed 217-213. It will likely stall in the 50-50 Senate.

Thankfully it won't pass in the Senate.

Crap like this is why the midterm elections are so important.

We need to get control of the House and gain a majority in the Senate.

The pendulum has swung way too far to the left.

It is time to bring it back to the center.

Locally,  they are giving for turning in handguns from 50 up to I think 200 bucks (maybe only 150) for high powered rifles in exchange for credit for food to buy.  I think I could easily sell for double that price on the open market.   I doubt the program will flourish much, not many takers.

I haven't had time to read the bill.  What does it actually ban?  All semi-auto rifles or just the "scary assault type" rifles.   There are many semi-auto rifles out there that are not the "assault" type.  Just wondering.  I realize that most of these folks don't' know the difference.

Hopefully the senate will crap can the bill.

If it fails in the Senate, the left has an excuse in the fall to blame those mean ole' righties. Politics as usual as long they have their "flock" still believing in them. There was a time in this country.....

Schumer has been holding 2 bills since last year about gun control measures, because he knew he couldn't clear the filibuster. I don't things will change with the current bills .

Hopefully, this fall will have changes in both houses of Congress more favorable to right leaning / centerist views. I know I'm voting against my current House rep (Charice Davids, D, 3rd District KS).
