Dang! Lousy day.

Or was it a good one?  Hmmm.

One of the last nice looking days in the forecast today, thought I'd take a short ride.  Decided on the Bullet, and as always I fired her up in the shed as I roll my bikes backwards down a fairly steep ramp, and I wouldn't get them back up if one sputters out.  I also let them warm up awhile for the same reason.  Well, about three or four minutes into that process she started acting like she was running out of gas and died soon afterward.  Great, here we go again.  No vent line kinks, good gas, new petcock, redid Dan-Marc on a downhill slope.  I'd had this exact same issue at the beginning of the summer, but after many long hours in the shed it is apparently back.  WTF, she's been running good all summer?  Grrr.

OK, not gonna let it ruin my day.  I fired Ruby up, and ventured out for a nice ride.  Upper 50s, I like that.  Trees are mostly without leaves and brown.  I don't like that.  Still a nice short ride and knocked out a few errands too.  Back at my ramp I stopped on the plywood in front, left her running in neutral and opened up the garage door.  Got back on, pulled my kickstand back with my foot and proceeded up the ramp -- and she died.  Grabbed a handful of clutch just in time, rolled down the ramp backwards and saw the culprit thankfully before it lodged into the ramp and pole vaulted the bike.  The danged kickstand was hanging.

Couple scary seconds later, I got her under control and put the stand full forward until it stopped.  Went inside and was lucky enough to find a small section of pliable wire, and was able to get the old girl back into the 12 x 20.  Found the spring and the pin with a sheared off bolt still inside it lying on the plywood.    How the hell will I get that fixed???  Really disheartening, and two issues I dread looking in to.

Two issues that probably won't get much attention until next spring.   Cheryl is scheduled for a total hip replacement November 8th, and I am going to do my best to help her through the healing and recovery process in any way I can.

Back to my question.  Was it a lousy day, or a good one?  Well, the Bullet didn't leave me stranded roadside somewhere.  Ruby got me back home before her kickstand bolt snapped off.  I got in a decent ride, and didn't crash or hit a deer.  I arrived home safely, and didn't drop Ruby on the ramp.  It was an okay day, I s'pose.

Reverting back to my aviation days, any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Especially since it looks like it's your last ride of the year, might as well take the Glass Half Full approach. With your Winters, you'll still have lots of time to figure out those two issues even after tending to the Mrs.

You got half the battle done by finding the spring.

I've dealt with this situation 3 times, once on a buddies bike and twice on mine.

The special pin is  - HOOK, SPRING 50536-MZ0-000  - and all three times it was easy to remove the broken off part, by grabbing the top part sticking out with plyers and up turning it.

Remove the side stand and you should see easier.

One of the times I was on a road trip from Georgia when it happened in NC on a driveway dirt berm.

My great nephew and I searched through his dad's screw/bolt collection and we found a bolt long enough to hold the spring.  I left it on there for sometime, cause I forgot it happened when I got home.

Yeah, I'd read about this happening to others, but figured that was a rare occurrence and caused by curb hopping or improper lifting.  I've made it a point to avoid that with my bikes.

Many moons ago when the VSG was still a thing we had a ride to the Texas Hill Country. One member had the same issue, and decided to use cheap twine to make a loop he could use to hold the kickstand up.

Riding home went into a high speed sweeper, things happened. The theory was he went right and the kickstand came loose, then hard left and it leveraged the bike up and off the road.

He died on the scene, his wife passenger was in a coma for a while.

So yeah. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but you had a fine day in my book.

Lotsa time...  90% chances of rain/snow Sunday, 40 mph winds, with 40s for highs and low teens at night. 'Round here Mother Nature sets the agenda.  God let's her get away with it.

I had mine break while on a road trip back from the GOTF in 2014 and used one of my bungee cords to hold the thing up
One end around my luggage rack the other tied to the stand

Just unhooked it when getting gas then hook it back up to ride

Get it fixed / replaced properly and then get a spare spring
