Lockhart, TX question

Just finished watching a show about barbecue on the Travel Channel.
Anybody in/around/been to Lockhart (BBQ capital of Texas) care to
give their opinion as to the best bbq in town? Just for fun, though.
Don't look like I'll be passing that way anytime soon.
I can eat pork bbq if I have to, but to me "bbq" means BEEF"!!!

Yeah, there was Blacks and a place pretty close to it...Smitty's?
I think that's all they mentioned. Then they went to NC and I was
all excited about ridin' over there one day..until...they said it was
all about pork.

Kreuz Market (pronounced Krights) is my personal favorite.  Last two times I went to Smitty's it was sub par. 

Black's used to cater a show I used to work on called Austin City Limits (ACL).  The owner would bring the food himself (I think he donated the food for a mention during credits at the end of each show) and then he would get to watch the taping on the day.  The food was always good.
My most memorable Black's meal was when I ate dinner with Buck Owens...we chatted for a good while over ribs and potato salad...Great guy!  He was touring with Dwight Yoakum at the time and they did an ACL taping together.

We ate a one in Lockhart that was right on 183. I'm not good at names but it was something like Chisom Smoke House the food was great and large portions. I believe the same people were once part of Black's but split after some kind of trouble. We at a Black's the next afternoon and it was also great and the place is a landmark of the area. The courthouse in town is also worth going by to see.

+ 1 for Kreuz's Haven't been there in years sincs they were in the old smokey building. No frills just good bbq on butcher paper.

+1 for Chisholm Trail (or whatever it's called these days) and +1 for Black's.  Since Kreuz's moved to the new building, I'm less impressed with their food than before.  The rumor I heard is that the couple who were running it split up and one got the "name" and the other got the building.  It seems the guy who got the building was the cook, I guess...  I found it dry the last time I tried it and thus have stuck with either Black's or Chisholm ever since.

Kreuz's was actually in the building where Smitty's is now for 99 years - right on town square.  The family's name is Smith and it seems that old man Smitty left Kreuz's to his three kids - two sons and one daughter.  The two sons got the business and the daughter got the building.  One son bought the other out and continued to pay rent to his sister.  Over the years the son would complain that his sister was charging him too much rent.  (I think he actually wanted to buy the building and she would not sell.) So, finally the son decided to move his business to its current location with a lot of fanfair including dragging the original coals through the streets of Lockhart from the old location to the new one.  Well, the daughter went ahead and opened Smitty's at the original location and hired back the pit boss from Kruez's...

There is a documentary about the whole afair floating around out there somewhere and the story made it unto 60 Minutes a while back.  My story is somewhat correct...

thanks for the correction, f-stop!  i was close, and yet still so far away.  i'll have to try smitty's, though, if they got their old pit boss back.
