Just occurred to me... the answer may be in your comment, meaning, they throw $ at it, replacing them so frequently it is a non issue.

all slick type tires have depth holes in various locations.

  Unless it has changed , the tires are mounted and there is more rubber than is needed(?).  The mounted tires are put in a special cutter that trues the tire to the axle center.  It is junk if it is removed or damaged.
