High Performance Jeep?

I don't know much about Jeeps, the off road style Jeeps.  I assumed they need the power at low end for getting out of off the road get stuck situations.

I pulled up next to a Jeep at a stop light on a four lane (two each way) surface road with a median.  The cage was driven by a young male (I'm 72 so males in their thirties are young) with three female passengers.  The doors were off with a rag top and the music was playing loudly enough to be annoying to some of the surrounding traffic.  The four of them were wildly be-bopping.  I did not look directly at them.

The light was red.  I was in the left lane.  In three quarters of a mile, well, maybe a half, I needed the right lane.  My intent was to jump off the stop and get enough ahead to move left in front of the Jeep.  It's not unusual for me to get off the line ahead of four wheeled traffic as I pay attention to the crossing traffic light and go quickly if there's no cross traffic rolling.

The light changed to green an I rolled under moderate acceleration.  As I cleared the far side of the intersection I heard slightly behind me the scream of the Jeep engine under high stress.  I turned the throttle hard on the Interstate and pushed through the gears under max thrust.  I could hear the Jeep slightly to my right rear.  He didn't catch me but came very closely to staying with me.  The PRV was 45 mph and the speedometer was crossing 80 when I showed him my brake light and shut down.  Of course, he blew by and I moved into the right lane.

I'm really not accustomed to that.  I guess the engine and gearing on the Jeep are not what I expected.  One more life lesson, maybe.

    Carl if you haven't already find Matts off Road Recovery or Fab Rats. Both outfits what they do Is in their name(s). That's just 2 of quite a few in that area of expertise. Judging by your experience his engine may have been moderatly to highly modified and probably in 4 wheel drive! Every so often we will trip across a cage somewhere that not only Wants to play but could also be Very Good at it!  RIDE SAFE.

Jeep has an option for a 392 Hemi. Bett you ran into one of those.

I've got a 2015 Jeep Wrangler.  Just a simple 2 door Jeep, no fancy packages.  That little 3.6 liter V6 is rated at 285 horsepower.  It's damn quick once it gets higher up in the rpm range.  I'm pretty sure my Valk could take it but, as you say, not by much.

All my other Jeeps over the years have been straight 6's that made their power down low.

As was mentioned above there is a 392 hemi option now too.  I can't imagine a circumstance where I would want something that ungainly to have that much power.

LOL!  Maybe so.  At any rate he didn't want me to change lanes in front of him and once he turned it on that thought was abandoned.  He did get a slight jump by going max earlier than I.

I've had similar experiences, all it takes to go fast is more money...............  

I recently had a hot rod diesel pickup do almost the same thing as the Jeep did to you.   Initially, I had no idea we were in a race to the next light and felt foolish for even playing the game with him.  That diesel pickup was no where near stock and the "contest" ended with similar results.   Although, I was on my trike and not the Cruiser or the "Rat" bike, I'm not sure it would have made a difference.

like said, a lot of it has to do with who gets the jump off the line.  an 1800 goldwing got the jump off the stop light, me on my 1500 Valk I/S.  I kept up neck and neck with him but unable to gain any ground about 10 ft always behind him since he got the jump off the line.  I shut down as well since was over 60 in a 35 mph speed zone, no ticket needed in town even with traffic, possible police around.

In 1974 I bought a new AMC Gremlin....small car with I think a 304 v8 that was very fast off the line.   Had a lot of fun with it.   The year before I think you could get the Gremlin with a 401 engine.    I cant imagine a Jeep with a 390 hemi....wow!!
