Clutch plates

Hi, I was wondering if any one has used after market plates on their bike from Amazon or any where else as Honda list there's at $320. TIA

    Is it Worth the cash saving for non O E M parts? If it were me-it aint it's you-I'd go with O E M parts when it comes to the clutch. RIDE SAFE.

GL1500 Goldwings fully loaded and pulling trailers get 300k+ miles from the OEM clutch. in '97 the clutch plates for Goldwings where upgraded to match the Valkyrie clutch.

when my '98 clutch rivets failed, I bought a used Goldwing clutch assembly from ebay to use the clutch basket for easier assembly of my clutch. it was listed at over 100k miles. I measured the plates and they were all still within spec listed in the service manual not even close to half worn.

so why are u replacing your clutch?

isn't that the price for the clutch basket only? and not the individual plates?

The reason I'm wanting to replace the clutch is after a ride to Alaska last Aug. with my bike with 200000 miles on it and a voyager kit installed pulling a tent trailer total towing weight of 1800 lbs. Last ride of the season I left the local coffee shop and when I twisted the throttle after I left the light it rev up but didn't go any faster, tried it once more than park it fo the winter. Going to replace the clutch before this riding season as I have another 3 week trip planned. Just curious what people are using that's all.

Just curious what engine oil you using......some will cause slippage.

Shell Rotella T6 for the last 20 years.

All original. Will be checking that out when weather warms up. Replacing clutch and brake lines with braided ones I bought a few years ago. Rebuilding what needs done. New brakes and service rear end, c/t 2 years ago.

clutch fluid, like brake fluid, same is used for both need to be replaced every 2 to 3 yrs. 
I use DOT 4 LV which provides a better feel in a larger range of ambient temps, but most important, has a higher wet boiling point allowing a 3 to 4 yr replacement time frame.

complete wasteful overkill unless u live in a rain forest area, with very high humidity.
just about all vehicle service manuals, including brake fluid manufacturers state 2-3 yrs.
any brake fluid with a higher wet boiling point than common Dot 4, will last longer than 2-3 yrs.

I  had  to do a full replacement way  back at 120K  on my Beast, Both inner  and  outer  baskets  were  scored  from 10 of  the  16 rivets   breaking  lose. It's  just pushing  200K  now .
She  is  fine

My Black  bike  I  need  to replace  the  Riveted   plate.
I always  keep them plates  handy now.
I will get to it as  soon  as  I  get a  clutch gasket.
Every time  I  go to order , it's on a  back order  since  2020.
    I will only change  that riveted  plate disk for  now  on..
The  tolerance  was  fine  on the  120K  bike.
But with all the internal damage , I just didn't  feel good  about  using the friction disks  again.

The  way to tell is  in the  clutch leaver, If  that leaver  is not coming all the  way back like  it  should  it's  the  riveted  disk is  starting to go..

A  top Honda  machinic  was  the  one  who told  me  that . He  would  always  feel the  clutch level on all of  our  bikes, When ever he  saw  us..
I asked  him  one  day years  ago ; why did  he  do that  . That's  what he  told  me.
He  said  the  friction plates  seldom  go bad  , but that riveted  plate he  could  feel when they were  not tight like  they should  be..
  And  should  be  replaced..  

But hey what do I  know..

I have 1984-1987-1999-1999-2002 vehicles all sense new. All have four wheel disc brakes.  I have never had to replace a brake caliper. Add the age of all my vehicles together that equals 149 years. I will stick with my inexpensive method.
