Or to hear an educated (?) reporter talk about someone being woken up. My suggestion...take "woken" totally out of your vocabulary and in most, if not all cases, use "awakened!"

'Gunman' could possibly be used as a descriptor, like 'Lineman', for instance..

Maybe the 'gunman' is/was off duty and at home relaxing and 'unarmed'..?..  Or maybe I just wasted way too much time thinking about it
