Rifle Upgrade

So, we have varmints that are a nuisance. First was the hogs now it's armadillo. No matter what the nuisance I am allowed to protect my family. The best tool is my Marlin .357 lever gun. My problem was these pests come in at night. I needed a way to effectively aim at night.

So I found this new system at Skinner Sights. It's a mini picanny rail that clamps onto the magazine tube. Then you mount this light/laser. It's so cool.







It lights up way farther than I care to shoot and the peep sight is super visible on target. It's way better than I hoped.

The Laser is handy especially for home defense but the light is what I got it for

It still fits on my mantle gun rack so it's a total win win

It's a green laser visible in daylight. I like it. The lumins is 1350 good for 260 meters

I have the same setup (different brands) on ARs and pistols.  

If I blazed away with anything that noisy in my neighborhood, they'd come and take me away (short of justifiable self defense or rabid animal).  

In the old days, for night shooting I'd pull an old sock down over my barrel and forearm, and duct tape a good flashlight under it (sock was to keep tape goo off the Ruger 10-22 with scope) (smaller varmints).  It was pretty clunky, but worked like a charm.

If it were a possum I would use my .22.   I think a .22 might bounce off the shell of the armadillo

What's a sail cat mom?

Well, when a cat has been run over enough times and is good and flat and all dried out, you can scrape one up and sail it through the air.

Short hairs fly better.

This was before Frisbees were invented.

This CZ #457 .22LR Varmint is the newest and nicest (traditional) rifle I own.  

Turkish walnut stock, 20.5" bull barrel, superior fit and finish, and very accurate.

At at about 8lbs with scope, it's heavy and for the occasional varmint removal I still go to my Ruger 10-22 Sporter which was the 2d firearm I ever bought over 50 years ago (and most used since).  Brand new it wasn't $100, and the scope was just a bit more expensive than the rifle.

I don't care for big variable scopes on .22s and both the CZ and Ruger have good quality straight 4X only on them (aim small, miss small).

My Dad's Ruger 10-22 had a magazine tube under the barrel that fed the rounds into the chamber.  It was spring loaded.  I don't remember how many .22 long rifle shells it would hold, but it was more than 10.  It was a hoot to shoot.

My Dad's Ruger 10-22 had a magazine tube under the barrel that fed the rounds into the chamber.  It was spring loaded.  I don't remember how many .22 long rifle shells it would hold, but it was more than 10.  It was a hoot to shoot.

Jimmy, I don't believe the Ruger 10-22 ever came with a tube feed, only mag feed.  (10 is standard, but aftermarket bananas up to 25-30)

Mossberg and Marlin both made tube feed 22s that could easily be mistaken for the Ruger.

Tube feed always carries more rounds (15-17?), but are a bit of a PITA to unload (with families and kids in the house).

     Still MISS my Remington nylon 66! Weaver 2 X 6 variable scope was PERFECT fer varmits. Killed a LOT of rats at a dump up in Wi. with that my High Standard 9 shoot 22 revolver and my Ruger single 6 also chambered for 22 mag! At night the 22 mag thru out a VERY visible flame upon discharge! That Remington was dang near indestructable. RIDE SAFE.

Nice set up Chris, I like green lasers, I have several pistols with Green Dot Sights.
Been shooting my Marlin Model 60's lately, Tube feed, one is an 18 round capacity 1977, and the other is a 14 round capacity 2009. I only shoot CCI Mini Mags Hollow Points through the marlins and my Ruger Mark III.

Shooting the other day at our local indoor range, a guy next to me was shooting an AR with a can out front, could barely hear that thing fire, that might have to be my next purchase.

cool rail system and lazer sight.  I wonder if it would fit on my old 1970ish cheapo cowboy gun being a Ithaca m49 .22 rifle that has a fake double lower barrel below much like your .357 rifle, although much smaller.

then again, the rail and sight would by far exceed the cost my dad paid for the gun when I was probably still in diapers in early 70's.   

If not mind me asking, what did the rail cost and the lazer sight?

Curious if this is or can it be made for quick detach from gun to gun? All my successful night shots had some sort of background light thus seeing the fixed sights clearly but I'm getting older and the damn outdoor security lighting gets a little funky from time to time.

Some will, some won't depending on the firearms you'd be switching to (mount systems/mount points).  

Lights alone are one thing, but laser aiming or dots would require zeroing each switch (beyond close shooting).

The few firearms I have these things on each wear their own stuff.  Mounted once, and zeroed once (except over time they may need tweaked a little).

A good small but powerful flashlight can be used with almost any firearm, but you have to hold them both.

Yes. They skinner sights makes several mounts. Just for a mount to each gun and it takes two seconds to switch. Who cares if the laser is scars off. It's the light I need. Nit specificities a standard picany rail but it looks like it will

Measure the diameter of your mag tube. I'm pretty sure there are specs listed on skinners site which diameter each one fits
