and not nuecular?

It grates on me everytime I hear a public figure mess with the syllables.  Often it is someone that I otherwise hold in high respect.

WHile you're at it - how about getting the right version of "to" ? As well as a few others

Interestingly, that misuse has aroused in me a particular interest in the handful of triple homonyms that exist in the English language.

Serk, don't get me started on the replacement of "of" for " 've".

John Schmidt

Yeah, right up there with "your" when they mean "you're", or confusing "bring" and "take...as in incorrectly saying "I'm bringing my kid to the doctor tomorrow" instead of "I'm taking my kid to the doctor tomorrow." The two terms essentially are going in different directions. If I happen to correct a blonde someone, the reaction is "nuecular."  ;)

Or as one of my 9th grade students once spelled it..."subtoll."  It was a challenging position, I won't expand on that except to say it wasn't a pleasant location.

The one that bugs me is when I hear or read, "people that do something".  It's people who do something.  Inanimate object are that.  People are who

There is a simple fix.  Do not use the work "nuclear".  Just use the work "nuke".

So, I was a Nuke on a Nuke Submarine from 1970 - 1973.

We never Nuked anyone.

But the Nukes I worked with were first class and super people.  The stories I could tell...... (if allowed).

I worked at a Nuke Power Plant (well three) from 1973 - 2012.  I was a real Nuke (Licensed Senior Reactor Operator on two of these three plants).

See, easy fix.

Being added to the dictionary doesn't make it any less of an ignorant word IMO

How To Write Good
by Frank L. Visco

My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules:
1.   Avoid alliteration. Always.
2.   Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3.   Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat.)
4.   Employ the vernacular.
5.   Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
6.   Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
7.   It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
8.   Contractions aren't necessary.
9.   Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
10.   One should never generalize.
11.   Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
12.   Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
13.   Don't be redundant; don't more use words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
14.   Profanity sucks.
15.   Be more or less specific.
16.   Understatement is always best.
17.   Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
18.   One-word sentences? Eliminate.
19.   Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20.   The passive voice is to be avoided.
21.   Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
22.   Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
23.   Who needs rhetorical questions?

Now that was put together resulting from some serious work.   :)

Willow, I came across that list years ago. I thought it to be brilliant! The guy that wrote it was an editor. I imagine he had ample material.
