The front straps on both sides of the bike holding the chromed exhaust covers have rusted thru and broken. They are of course attached to the inside of the cover and wrap around the exhaust header just behind the foot pegs.
I can wrap a strap clamp around to hold it, but very un-elegant.
Any suggestions on how to fix, short of replacing the entire chrome piece is appreciated. Not sure if the covers are even available.
It's 98 Tourer if that matters.
TIA
Greg

Checking in to Partzilla, both sides show unavailable, so used might be the only choice for replacement.
I don't know enough about metal welding to say for sure, but repair may work, but I feel the chrome may be ruined.
Check in at EBay.

You could take them down to a welding shop (auto body?), with a new set of the right size hose clamps, and ask if they can tack them in w/o screwing up the chrome. I'm no welder, but there's TIG, MIG and other types, and maybe one of those is best on the heat issue. The interweb says...TIG Welding or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding creates the least heat.
If you decide to clamp them on from the outside, look for a set of smooth (non slotted if possible), thin clamps and rotate the screw tighteners as far inside/out of sight as possible.

Thanks guys. I guess I will try the strap clamp. Hate to lose them.

Same thing happened on my '98 Tourer a few years ago. I found some stainless steel hose clamps that are barely noticeable. I installed them like Jess suggests.

I have a used set of them in the shop. If you need them, let me know we will work out a price. I haven't looked at them for a while. They are boxed. If you are interested, I will provide pics.

I thought of another fix that may or may not work, I haven't tested it.
Get the right size ss hose clamp, ss rivets, and put then together.
Probably could do it in a way the revits are not that conspicuous.

That could work out pretty well. Fairly easy fix if so.

I bought some hose clamps, but honestly, even without the front straps they seem very secure. They are not rattling and I cannot easily lift them, though I am not putting a lot of effort into lifting them. I am carrying the clamps with me and can easily apply if needed.
