Last winter I purchased a 1998 Honda Valkyrie GL 1500 and I'm trying to get it running. I'm not sure how long it's been sitting. I removed the tank to replace the fuel valve and found a lot of rust inside. The old fuel screen was nonexistent. I purchased a new one and it is entirely too long for the tank. It came with an in-line filter as well. Is it safe to trim it?

Well Honda OEM parts only for the most part. Aftermarket parts are a crap shoot at best especially no mention of having a Honda OEM manual for reference. Electrolysis is great for removing rust inside tanks. Be sure to coat the inside with some Marvel Mystery oil soon after to prevent rusting until in service again. Replacing/rebuilding the whole fuel system is probably on your horizon to. Anything rubber like fuel rail o'rings, fork seals, manifold o'rings, the petcock rebuild and the float needle valve replaced are a few items on these bikes probably need replaced. Not a hard job restoring these just time consuming and obviously finding parts.

The "Shop Talk" section is great resource for most repairs.

Hello, Heath.  If you have the original valve, you can cut the brass tube of the new one to be like the old one.

The filter-strainer would be hard to modify.  That item is flimsy and would take some skill.  The "bottom" end is larger in diameter to fit the fuel outlet snugly, so don't cut that off.  The "top" end is sealed, and looks like a little cap.  That cap makes all the fuel run through the filter.

If it looks like you wound up with the wrong one (and it was not real expensive) it may be time to investigate another valve.

I sort of have a similar question.  I would like to replace the Fuel Valve on my 2003 Honda Valkyrie STD.  I found what was suppose to be an exact replacement on Partszilla.  This is what it looks like.

https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/16950-MZ0-033?ref=7ffde34c6fcc93c1c6a3e0eceafcf3885e05038b

Is this an exact replacement for my 2003 STD??

There appear to be two different units (by part number) for my bike.

Thanks.

Came up when I was looking at your part info:

https://www.amazon.com/HONDA-Honda-16950-MZ0-033-Petcock-Assy/dp/B00I87I9ZK/ref=asc_df_B00I87I9ZK?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=79852222004479&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=100813&hvtargid=pla-4583451685999298&psc=1

Ok, the question becomes, will the part mentioned in the quote above fit my 2003 Valkyrie Standard?  It is the same part number as the part on Partzilla about about half the price.

However the following data is listed with the part on Amazon.

Honda Fuel Petcock GL1500 Valkyrie Tourer 1997-2003 97-03 16950-MZ0-033

Again, my bike is a 2003 "Standard".
