I have a '98 GL1500 C.

I'm told: rear drive gears (Honda part number 41310-MZ0-000) need to be replaced; there are no OEM parts for this; used parts are my only option; the dealer can't find the parts.

My Valkyrie has been in their shop for 3 months. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe your best bet would to find a complete used rear pumpkin.

I'm pretty sure any model, any year will fit.

run from that shop.  unless those gears were run dry there is nothing wrong with them.
get details from them, pictures, why they want to replace them.

Thanks.

(Btw, not my normal repair shop. I'm out of state.) I went in for a visit a couple weeks after they started. They showed me the parts.

Shiny spots on the teeth of both gears. I don't know what's normal/problematic. Should have taken pics. I'll request and post here.

They said poor maintenance, fluid looked old and dirty, should have been changed; also, extra lubrication should be applied with every tire change. Again, I don't know what's what.

so talking about the splines? and not the ring and pinion?

the ring gear spline can be pressed out and replaced with a good one from a Goldwing 1500 ring gear spline. the ring gears are not interchangeable.

It's the two gears the red arrows are pointing to. Ring and pinion?

yes ring and pinion. being shinny isn't a problem. all will have some wear. yes worst if oil is never changed every 25k per shop manual. the only way one can see the pinion is by taking the cover off. why would they do that?  how many miles on bike? the oil has moly additive in it from factory fill, so it will look black/gray, its not a problem.
I would have them put it back together put the correct fluid in and leave that place before they try to scam u on something else.

1. "cover off. why would they do that?" - their explanation: oil looked dark; gears should be lubed each time new tires go on; their check revealed gear wear.

2. "how many miles on bike?" - 87,000

3. "I would have them put it back together put the correct fluid in and leave that place before they try to scam u on something else." - thanks, that's what I'm doing. (This is a big dealer. Never expected this experience.)
