Got a new dog today......

Continuing my passion for Siberian Knuckleheads, we got a new dog today. My daughter hooked us up with another "Husky Rescue". Dakota, the black and white left in a kennel for the past year, joins Tundra, the red and white that was our first rescue after my dog team started to dwindle down. If you are looking for a calm house dog that doesn't shed......keep looking!!

Gorgeous dog !!  When I was in the Arctic of Alaska, I looked out the back window of the station and saw a pup chained out back.  I called the dispatcher and asked what the story was of that pup out back.  She told me it was scheduled to be taken to the dump and shot the next day.  The only thing wrong with this pup was that it was under fed and dirty !!  He sat quietly/alone.  Ears were pricked sharp/forward.  His back was as straight as an arrow, HUGE hooves on him.  When approached, he quietly sat with tail wagging.

Nope, ain't happenin' !!!  I named him Kobuk and he became mine.  I took him home and then headed to the grocers.  Bought a 5lbs sack of Puppy Chow and got the butcher to give me a big sack of scraps.  Got some eggs, supplements and went home and cooked that boy a warm meal and mixed it up with the Puppy Chow. By the end of day two... that sack of food was gone, as well as equal share of meat scraps !!!!  I thought, oh no !!!  What have I gotten myself into ?!?!  I can't afford this appetite on a cop's salary in the Arctic !!!  Oh well... went to the store and got another sack of Chow... which lasted well beyond a week.  After day two, the boy figured out, HEY !!!  This guy's gonna feed me EVERY day !!!  Took him down to the Fire Station and started in on bathing the boy.  Well... before ya knew it, he was catching up with those hooves of his and his coat was turning out GREAT.  I think he was 3/4 Malamute and 1/4 German Shepherd.  At a year of age, he was approaching 100lbs.  What a great dog he was turning into.  I had to give him to my dad when I moved to Anchorage, and dad let another one of the cops talk him out of him... and then someone stole him from the guy when he didn't keep him properly secured in his yard.  The dog was just too strong for the means he had set up.  Someone ended up with a great dog.

I've own two Husky's the first got off the run and was hit by a car about 4 weeks after we got him. The second ( brother to the first ) we had for 14 years. When he died it hit my family hard my daughter will still cry over that ol'dog. He died 10 /11 years ago and we have never had another dog. His name was Doc he was a black/white with beautiful blue eyes.

I'm glad some people like those dogs... they drive me nuts!  My buddy has one, and they are the closest thing to a cursed cat I have ever seen in a canine.

Me, I am a German Short Haired Pointer guy... and I know there are a lot of people out there that don't like those. 

Nice thing about America (for now...) is that we all don't have to agree on stuff like motorcycles and dogs...

My brother has a german shorthair.  Great dog...but a total spaz.  She has gotten alot better as she has aged a few years, but still goofy.  You should see her around a campfire.  She jumps up in the air trying to catch the sparks, ashes, smoke...whatever...in her mouth.  She totally freaks out when it snows...so much to catch from everywhere, she doesn't even know what to do.  And when he breaks out the chainsaw and the woodchip start flying, watch out.  She ends up covered in them with a mouthfull.  That dog is hilarious.

I would think that baby would be a lot of fun to watch.    Dogs are amazing if you take the time to watch and enjoy.

I use mine to hunt... so they get a lot of exercise, plus I did a lot of research on breeders before I got one.  (I have 2 now and HAD a 3rd that got killed) They are fairly calm.  They are 7 and 4 years old.  They are bird hunting MACHINES too.

If you want a spaz dog,....get a smooth fox terrier. They were bred with attatude problems. Yeah, like they kill birds, mice, rats, squirrels, possums, and even skunks.

My wife had one as a kid, as did I. In the last twenty years we have had two more. A dog with heart and only loyal to one master. A clown dog with true reasoning abilities.

The one on the right is an australian kelpie,, very fast herding dog so I am told. She was a rescue as her big sister was

she must be part nutdog and will eat ANYTHING bark at anything and chase anything

She can go thru a couple of knuckle bones a day before starting on stuffed animals and couches

We cage her when we go out so we still have furniture

It truly is the size of the fight in the dog.

I have a Jack Russel Terrier at his (my) house. I call him my land piranna. He is friendly when loose but DO NOT go near his truck or house. I will have to replace the side windows on my truck when he passes, glass is all scratched. Most loyal and smart dog I have ever had. My last one killed stuff (mice, shrews bunnies) but this one likes toys.

I agree!  Rescue dogs are the way to go!  Almost every major breed has a dedicated rescue organization.  Plus, they are usually house-broken, partially or fully trained, and one HECK of a lot cheaper than getting one from a breeder.
