Valves tapping

Hey All,

My valves are tapping and it is driving me crazy. I have adjusted them three times so I am comfortable that they are where they should be. (By the way, valve adjustment on the Valk is so much easier then playing with the shims in my 81 CB900c.) Also have had the carbs synced. I brought it into the dealer for the rear tire change and he told me that it is pretty normal for the  Valk. Exhaust is tightened up and it has been desmogged. 99 Standard. Should I just learn to live with it?

May not even be the valves.  If you still have the smog equipment you could be hearing the pair valves opening and closing.......others have thought this was valves as well

Sounds to me that that would have been applicable here.

You should consider that maybe your technique is lacking and read up on how to perform a valve lash adjustment on your Valkyrie motor.

Simply to say you've had similar non-problematic experiences on other motors is not sufficient to award you a "Valkyrie medic" certificate of achievement and start scouring around for some other obscure reason for your torment.

The "proof is in the pudding" and that would be you shouldn't have messed with it in the first place. The truth now would seem that a more that sensitive aural phenomenon has occurred and I would suggest leaving it alone for a while and see what happens.

Try a little more viscous oil. That might help you.

Gee Ricky-D I didnt know I needed a merrit badge to be able to do my valves.  Holy cow.  It sounds like he has done valves before.  I have been working on these style tappets since 1974 and they arent that hard.......oh, and I have no stinkin badge or certificate of merritt.............gee wiz

May not be the valves at all, mine ticks every once in awhile and like you desmoged and of course checked the exhaust.

Both sides?
If the valves are adjusted, I'd go with leaky exhaust gaskets.

Between my headers, the blower and the clicking of the fuel injectors I'd have a tough time hearing the valves.

Mines has a slight tick at idle. Has since day 1. Its desmogged, header gaskets, and valves checked. Been that way for 10 yrs and 56k miles.

just did an archive search for "ticking". lots to check, one interesting result was one of the coils.
